Alexander Campbell believed that vital churches needed close ties to strong liberal arts colleges. The preparation of thoughtful, faithful church leaders was essential to his mission when he founded Bethany. It remains central to Bethany’s mission today.

The Office of Church Relations at Bethany has as it primary responsibility the continuation of that mission. To that end, in concert with the Office of the Chaplain and the Department of Religious Studies, it seeks to prepare students for leadership positions in the 21st Century Church. Also, through the work of Buffalo Seminary, it provides continuing education opportunities for clergy and laity.

Bethany’s rich heritage as a training ground for leaders in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) provides the root-stock from which our present work grows. The Office of Church Relations oversees the work of Historic Bethany and the Campbell Archives. It is delights in connecting today’s churches to their roots here in “Mecca.”
