BETHANY, W.Va. – Three Bethany College Communication students attended the Council of Independent Colleges and New York Times Student Newspaper Editors Workshop on Oct. 17 in New York City. Representing Bethany College were Chelsea Boyd, a senior from Wheeling, W.Va.; Jennifer Braum, a junior from Uniontown, Pa.; and Christopher Stark, a senior from Mineral Ridge, Ohio.

A total of 73 students from 30 Council of Independent Colleges participated in the day-long workshop.

“Exciting, stimulating and diverse are three words I would use to describe my New York Times experience because I was so excited to have the opportunity to travel to New York City and be up-close to one of the nation’s leading newspapers. The experience stimulated me to take what I learned from the workshop and apply it to my work here at Bethany and later in life as well. The experience was also diverse because it covered various aspects of the newspaper,” Braum said.

The workshop began with an editing session with three New York Times editors and personnel recruiters. The students were instructed to proof and write headlines for a number of articles.

Students were given an inside look on the decision-making and reporting process at the newspaper with a panel discussion. They also listened to a presentation from an advertising representative.

We had the chance to meet and talk with fellow students which was great for sharing experiences and ideas about our college newspapers. We would not have had this opportunity had it not been for President Smith and the Council of Independent Colleges,” Boyd said.
