BETHANY, W.Va. — The chair of the Bethany College biology department of recently received a $20,000 Instrumentation Grant from West Virginia Science & Research.

Dr. Anna Edlund, an associate professor of biology, will use the funds to purchase an autoclave for sterilization of laboratory materials and disposal of biohazard materials. The device will also be used to train students in the methodology of sterile technique.

An autoclave is an essential piece of equipment for any biology department, she said.

“This will be great for our students,” Edlund said. “And having a better equipped department will help with recruitment.”

Edlund is among six professors to receive an Instrumentation Grant. Dr. James Wood of West Liberty University, Dr. Laura Robertson of Shepherd University, Dr. Matthew Scanlon and Kristy Henson of Fairmont State University, and Dr. Xiaoping Sun of University of Charleston also received funds, according to West Virginia Science & Research.

West Virginia Science & Research is a division of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. The Instrumentation Grants are supported by the Research Challenge Fund, which was created by the West Virginia Legislature in 2004 to support research and development at colleges and universities.
