BETHANY, W.Va. — Bethany College Communication Professor, Dr. Patrick Sutherland, will be presenting research on media convergence and integration at the First Annual “Expanding the Definition of Convergence and Integration” Conference to be held April 19-20, at Texas Tech University.

Sutherland, Associate Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Communication, will present a paper titled “Content and Interactive Features on Local Television Stations’ Front Web Pages.”

Sutherland’s project involved a content analysis of 120 local TV station websites. Findings were analyzed and compared with data from the five most heavily visited TV websites in the United States.

Sutherland noted that, in part perhaps due to rapid growth of broadband Internet delivery, a national trend at TV stations is that video based news is being re-assembled and re-purposed onto TV websites and other distribution channels.

“Locally, the websites of both 7 News at WTRF in Wheeling and News 9 at WTOV in Steubenville are examples of innovative use of “video-on-demand” and other interactive features,” said Sutherland. “The Bethany College Communication curriculum is in the process of adding several new digital media courses by next fall.”

“Our campus media have also recently obtained state-of-the-art digital media components such as high-definition digital camcorders, graphics drawing tablets, and Internet audio streaming by WVBC, the campus radio station,” said Sutherland.
