BETHANY, W.Va. – Eleven area painters drew inspiration from landmarks on the Bethany College campus and surrounding village on Thursday as part of the Ohio Valley Plein Air Paint Out.

The Historic Oglebay Gates, Old Main, Bethany Trail System, and the Grace Phillips Johnson Visual Arts Center were just a few of the sites from which the painters drew.

Event creator Eric Dye set out for the waterfall, while watercolorist Karen Catlett chose a trail view from the Outdoor Classroom. Meanwhile, oil painter Greg Siegwart turned his attention to an exterior doorway of Commencement Hall.

Plein air is French for open air.

Photos of the Plein Air Paint Out are available on Bethany’s Flickr page.

Bethany served as the second host site for the five-day Paint Out. Artists were greeted by sunny blue skies – a welcome change from their experience Wednesday in Moundsville, where heavy rains forced the plein air group inside.

The artists are scheduled to visit Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold in New Vrindaban on Friday and Oglebay Park on Saturday.

The Paint Out artwork will be part of a public exhibit from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Artworks Around Town, 2200 Market St., Wheeling. Some works will remain on display throughout September.

The Paint Out will conclude Sunday with a “quick draw” at Historic Centre Market.

Artworks Around Town is a nonprofit gallery and art center in Centre Market that focuses on supporting and sustaining artists across the region. For more information, visit artworksaroundtown.com.
