BETHANY, W.Va.– Bethany College is honored to announce that Dr. Gregory E. Sterling, dean of Yale School of Divinity (YDS), will be the distinguished speaker for the upcoming Founder’s Day ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Sterling is a leading figure in theological education, serving as the dean of YDS since 2012, and recently appointed for a third five-year term. Prior to his tenure at YDS, he served as dean of the graduate school at the University of Notre Dame for a decade, where he spent 23 years as a faculty member.

Sterling is an influential voice in addressing issues of inequality and injustice. His commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in the significant increase in faculty, staff, and students from underrepresented groups. He has also implemented initiatives to ensure an inclusive experience for the entire YDS community.

Sterling’s impact extends beyond the academic realm. Under his leadership, YDS achieved the milestone of covering all tuition costs and a portion of living expenses for students with demonstrated need. Additionally, he spearheaded the creation of the Living Village for student housing, a groundbreaking green-building residential complex that aims to set a national and global standard for sustainability.

In the realm of teaching and research, Sterling’s focus on Hellenistic Judaism has resulted in over 100 scholarly papers and several published books. He is the general editor of the “Philo of Alexandria Commentary” series and co-editor of the “Studia Philonica Annual.”
