BETHANY STUDENTS HONORED AT CONVOCATION

BETHANY, W.Va. – The presentation of College-wide awards to three Bethany College students highlighted the annual Honors Day and Convocation held on April 17, 2008 in Commencement Hall at Bethany’s historic Old Main.

Jack Wheeler, a double major in Social Work and Psychology with a minor in French, received the Francis O. Carfer Prize as Outstanding Senior. Wheeler is a graduate of Cortland (Ohio) Lakeview High School who now resides in Hilliard, Ohio. The Francis O. Carfer Prize is presented to the senior who, in the judgment of the Honors Committee, has made the most outstanding contribution to the College. Recipients must exhibit sound academic accomplishments along with characteristics of loyalty, service and devotion to Bethany.

Jennifer Manor, a double major in Mathematics and Economics, received the Bethany 2000 Prize. Manor is a graduate of Hedgesville (W.Va.) High School and resides in Hedgesville. The Bethany 2000 Prize recognizes the senior who has best demonstrated loyalty and commitment to Bethany College in a wide range of activities over the course of his or her studies. The recipient must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate the characteristics of enthusiasm, dependability and dedication.

Mary Lu Adams, a Psychology major, received the Pittsburgh Bethany College Club Award as Outstanding Junior Woman. Adams is a graduate of Wheeling Park (W.Va.) High School and resides in Valley Grove, W.Va. The award is based on the qualities of leadership, character, conduct and scholarship. The Club, comprised of Bethany alumni in the Pittsburgh area, has placed a plaque in Phillips Hall upon which the names of the winners are engraved.

President Scott D. Miller presided over the Honors Day and Convocation with the College’s Honors Committee, chaired by Professor David J. Rudari, in charge of arrangements for the event. Faculty members serving on the Honors Committee included Barry Christmas, Robyn Cole, Brooke Deal, James Hall and T. Gale Thompson.
