The history of the Darline Nicholson Spring Breakfast at Bethany College dates back to its inception as the May Morning Breakfast in 1947. The breakfast, featuring a traditional menu including strawberries and cream, was established as an event for female faculty members and senior women to come together at the end of the school year to honor Bethany’s senior women.

The Panhellenic Council assumed sponsorship of the breakfast during the 1960s and the event was expanded to include all women on the College faculty, staff and student body along with invited guests. In the early 1970s, a fashion show was added as part of the festivities. The May Morning Breakfast was renamed the Darline Nicholson Spring Breakfast in 2000.

It has become a tradition for the brothers of Sigma Nu fraternity to serve as waiters for the event. Another tradition is a toast to the senior women given by the Outstanding Junior Woman. This year’s Outstanding Junior Woman is Mary Lu Adams of Valley Grove, W.Va.

Highlighting the program will be the presentation of the Aleece C. Gresham Award. This prize is given to a senior woman who has exhibited sound academic accomplishment, participated in and displayed leadership in a variety of co-curricular activities and shown dedication and commitment to the College.
