BETHANY, W.Va. —Bethany College has teamed up with International Relief and Development (IRD) to implement Bethany: Hands to Haiti — a program designed to raise funds and support for victims of the recent catastrophe in Haiti.
Hands to Haiti will feature a variety of projects and kicked off last week with an Amazon Kindle Raffle that will run until February 5. Vote for Your Favorite Luxury — a money drive featuring pictures of water, food, clothes, family, roof and more — will be held during meal times in Boomer’s, the Dining Hall and The Bethany Beanery on campus. Bethany will also be accepting admission donations at men’s and women’s home basketball games.
Project Red, inspired by the international Project (RED) campaign to raise money and awareness for The Global Fund, will feature a week of events February 22-27. Activities will include a speaker from IRD, fashion show, “Wear Red for Haiti” day, a red food competition and more. All proceeds will go to Hands for Haiti. A Haitian dinner is also being organized in order to raise funds and increase awareness. Students will be asked for donations, and the event will be open to the local community.
Bethany: Hands to Haiti organizers hope to raise $10,000 by the end of the semester. As funds are secured, they will be donated to IRD. Founded by Bethany Board of Trustee member and alumnus Dr. Arthur B. Keys, Jr. '67, IRD is one of the premier organizations implementing development services and programs across a broad spectrum of regions and technical activities. Its mission is to reduce the suffering of the world’s most vulnerable groups and to provide tools and resources needed to increase their self-sufficiency. IRD currently has teams on the ground delivering aid and assistance in Haiti. Dr. Keys serves as the President and CEO of the organization.
