BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College Community will celebrate the fourth annual National Bison Day on Saturday, November 5. The Office of Student Life has planned a week’s worth of activities (Nov. 1-5) leading up to National Bison Day.

The activities begin on Tuesday, Nov. 1, with a “Color Your Bison” in the Dining Hall, as well as a surprise bison event. In the evening, the Piscataway Nation Singers and Dancers from Port Tobacco, Maryland, will return to Bethany to present a colorful educational and entertaining evening featuring American Indian dancing, drum and song. The event is open to the public and begins at 8 p.m. in Renner Too (Phillips Hall).

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, students can stop by and take a picture with Bethany’s mascot, Boomer the Bison for the “Beards for Bison” activity in the Dining Hall during lunch. There will be a prize drawing for $50 in Boomer Points. Thursday, Nov. 3, students will join Boomer in Commencement Hall for “Be a Bison Day.” This annual event brings together the Bethany student body in creating welcome cards to incoming Bethany students. The club or organization that completes the most welcome cards will win a $100 prize.

The surprise bison event will continue at the corridor of Old Main on Friday, Nov. 4. There will also be “Spot a Bison,” at the Student Life table during lunch in the Dining Hall. In order to win $50 in Boomer Points, students must show their “Bison Pride” and wear green and white apparel with a bison on it.

The celebration will conclude with the Fourth Annual National Bison Day, Saturday, Nov. 5 with a Bethany Bison Football game at 1:30 p.m. in Bison Stadium.

Celebrated on the first Saturday of November, National Bison Day brings historical and cultural education to the United States. On May 9, 2016, President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act making the North American bison the official National Mammal of the United States.

Bethany College participated in the “vote bison” campaign, which was sponsored by the International Buffalo Council, the National Bison Association and the Wildlife Conservation Society to see that the bison be elected the national mammal.
