Bethany, WV – Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller will lead a session on executive search Wednesday at the 2015 Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Presidents Institute at Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.
Now in his 24th year as a college or university president, Dr. Miller also serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Washington, D.C. – based Academic Search, Inc. He will speak and moderate a panel that includes Cheryl Hyatt, Partner, Hyatt-Fennell Executive Search of Pittsburgh; R. Stanton Hales, Senior Consultant, Academic Search, Inc., of Washington, D.C., and Katherine Haley, Principal, Witt/Kieffer of Chicago.
According to Dr. Miller, the panel will discuss essential ingredients and strategies of senior leadership searches for higher education, including what can go wrong and how to make it right.
The Presidents Institute is CIC's premier event, bringing presidents of independent colleges and universities together for networking, problem-solving, and sharing of ideas among colleagues who are leading similar institutions. In recent years, CIC's Presidents Institute has become the largest annual meeting of college and university presidents, regularly attracting more than 370 higher education chief executives.
Dr. Miller has been active with CIC for nearly 30 years and has served as Chair of the CIC New Presidents Program for 15 years.
Currently in his eighth year as president of West Virginia's oldest degree-granting institution, Dr. Miller has been a higher education leader for over 30 years. In addition to his service at Bethany, Dr. Miller served as president of Wesley College in Delaware and Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee.
He has written hundreds of articles and written or edited 11 books, most with his long-time co-author, Dr. Marylouise Fennell, a former college president and current senior counsel for the Washington, DC-based Council of Independent Colleges (CIC).
A highly sought presenter, mentor, and author on higher education topics including financial sustainability and presidential performance for national conferences and trade journals, Dr. Miller is a regular columnist for "The Huffington Post," "College Planning and Management," "Enrollment Manager," and "The State Journal." He is the co-executive editor of "Presidential Perspectives," an online presidential thought series that has resulted in nine books. Dr. Miller is a nationally respected and influential advocate of liberal arts education, and was profiled in a 2014 feature in "The Chronicle of Higher Education."
In 2005, the American Council on Education book “The Entrepreneurial College President” recognized him as one of the 17 most entrepreneurial college presidents in America. His use of social media to promote Bethany College has earned national recognition.
