Music Auditions

Auditions can be scheduled by appointment on Saturdays or Bethany College visitation days. If another time is desired, contact the appropriate professor (listed below) to help arrange an alternate time. If you are traveling from a distance to visit Bethany College, efforts will be made to schedule you an audition while on campus.

While an in person audition is ideal, a DVD may be submitted if time and/or distance makes a live audition impossible.  Please send materials to:

After your audition the music faculty will notify you if you are recommended for admission into the music program.

The Bethany College Center for Enrollment has the final decision on acceptance to the college.

Audition Requirements

  • There is no prearranged list of repertoire for the auditions. Two or three selections of standard academic repertoire for your instrument are appropriate. The faculty will be listening for above average musicality and potential for growth. Memorization is not mandatory, but it is encouraged. The performance section of the audition should last around 10 minutes. Students will be asked to complete a short listening, pitch matching and theory test during this time. This will help with the appropriate course placement.
  • Please arrive at least 10 minutes prio to your audition time to warm up and tune.
  • Parents are welcome to attend the auditions.
  • Please schedule your audition as soon as possible to receive the best possible scholarship opportunities.

Voice - Music Major Requirements

For auditions, students should prepare two selections:

  1. American or British art song (Musical Theater permitted)
  2. Foreign-language art song or aria (Italian, German or French)

Recommended: a selection from the 24 Italian Art Songs and Arias - Schirmer Edition. 

Music Minor or Scholarship Only Requirements

For auditions, students should prepare two selections:

  1. “Shenandoah” in a comfortable key (a cappella)
  2. American or British art song (Musical Theater permitted)

Piano/Organ - Requirements

Students wanting to major, minor, or receive a music scholarship on the piano or organ should perform two contrasting pieces from memory: (Organists do not have to memorize)

  1. One work or movement by J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, orSchubert
  2. One work or movement by a composer from the 19th century or later

Brass/Woodwind - Music Major Requirements

Students should perform two  selections of standard literature for their instrument. (Preferably contrasting styles)

Prospective wind players will also be asked to play major scales up to and including four flats and four sharps.

Music Minor Requirements

Students should perform one selection of standard literature for their instruments. Prospective wind players will also be asked to play major scales up to and including two flats and sharps.

Strings - Requirements

Music majors and minors should perform two contrasting works from the Baroque, Classic, Romantic or 20th Century style periods. A movement of a larger work may be considered as one composition. Students do not have to perform from memory.

Percussion - Music Major Requirements

For auditions, students should prepare two (2) selections.

  1. One snare drum solo. (Recommended: a solo by Charley Wilcoxon)
  2. One xylophone or marimba selection.

It is not required to perform drum set material. However it would be advantageous to demonstrate a few different styles. (Rock, Latin, Swing)

Music Minor Requirements

For auditions, students should prepare one (1) selection, either snare drum or xylophone/marimba.

Marching Band

Students interested in Marching Band can perform an excerpt of their high school literature that demonstrates musicality and knowledge of their instrument.

Guitar - Music Major requirments

  1. Scales: First position in C, G, F, D, A, Am (3 types), Em (3 types), Dm(3 types). A recommended resource for study is A Modern Method for Guitar, Vol. 1 by William Leavitt, pp. 4, 8, 30, 35, 39, 43, 47, 53, 56
  2. Chords:  “Rhythm Accompaniment” exercises from A Modern Method for Guitar, Vol. 1, pp. 24 and 30, played at a moderate tempo, are required.
  3. Sight Reading: Fluency in sight reading in several keys, first position, is required. An example from A Modern Method for Guitar, Vol. 1, pp. 4-38, will be selected at random and must be performed at a moderate tempo.
  4. Solo Pieces: Two solo pieces of contrasting styles are required. Pieces must not rely on other instruments for accompaniment. Suggested sources for these solo pieces are The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method, Vol. 1; A Modern Method for Guitar, Vol. 1 by William Leavitt; Solo Guitar Playing, Book 1 by Frederick M. Noad
