Feb. 3 – BETHANY, W. Va. – Men’s basketball guard, junior Delonte’ Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), and women’s basketball forward, sophomore Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), have been named the Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Athletes of the Month for the month of January, announced the Bethany SAAC on Friday.
Joyce had an outstanding month of January, averaging a team-high 15.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. His best performance came in a win (96-56) against Westminster on Jan. 8, when he dropped 29 points and grabbed five rebounds. He also added four steals, one block and one assist. He posted double figures in all eight games. Joyce also is one of the best on-ball defenders in the league, averaging three steals per game over the last eight contests.
On the season, Joyce is averaging a team-high 15.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He has posted double figures in the scoring column in 18-of-20 contests on the year. Not only has he been dynamite on the offensive end, he also has played outstanding defense, ranking fourth in the country in steals per game (3.21).
Schott has dominated the glass over the month of January, averaging 7.7 rebounds per game, including a career-high 15 against Chatham on Jan. 15. Not only can she rebound, but she is a capable scorer, averaging 9.9 points per game. Schott made her biggest impact on Jan. 8 against Westminster, where she scored a career-high 20 points and corralled six boards.
Schott has had a phenomenal year thus far, leading the team in rebounds (7.2) and is second on the team in points per game (10.4). She has scored in double figures in 10-of-19 contests this year, including three double-double efforts. On defense Schott has made her presence known, leading the team in total blocks and ranking fourth on the team in steals per game.
Other nominees for the SAAC Athletes of the Month included swimming and diving athletes, freshman Jacob Collas (South Park, Pa./South Park), sophomore Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) and freshman Christine Pray (Canton, Mich./Canton), as well as basketball standouts, senior Kevin Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook), senior Leslie Addy (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and sophomore Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range).
