March 18 – BETHANY, W. Va. – Bison sophomores, track and field national qualifier Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and softball standout Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), have been named the Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Athletes of the Week, announced the Bethany SAAC on Tuesday.
After qualifying 13th for the D-III National Championships in the triple jump, Moore capped his remarkable indoor season by finishing 14th at the National Championships with a leap of 45’ 1 ½”, on Saturday afternoon.
Moore had a fabulous indoor season for the Bison, finishing top-three in the triple jump five times, including a record-setting performance at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. He also performed at a high level when competing in the long jump, grabbing fourth place or better in all five meets.
Kelly opened the 2014 campaign hitting .333 over the first four games of the season. In the Bison’s opening-day victory over Hope College, Kelly went 2-for-3 with two extra-base hits. The sophomore outfielder notched a double, triple, a stolen base and a run scored in the 2-1 victory. She also registered two hits and a RBI in a 7-5 loss to Amherst.
Through six total games this year, Kelly currently leads the Bison in batting average (.353), slugging percentage (.529), as well as hits and RBI (3). She is also 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts and leads the team in on base percentage (.389).
Other nominees for the SAAC Athletes of the Week included sophomore lacrosse standout Grant Delaney (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and senior second baseman Dominic Controguerra (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) on the men’s side, and junior softball pitcher Kiersten Conwell (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) for the women.
