April 9 – WHEELING, W. Va. – Paced by a second-place finish from senior Ryan Vassil (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), the Bison men’s golf team posted a fifth-place finish at the Bethany Invitational hosted by Wheeling Country Club on Wednesday.
Vassil earned the program’s first top-five finish since Nolan Wilson finished fifth at the Westminster Autum Classic on October 8, 2011. After posting a 40 on the front nine, Vassil tied the lowest score of any player on the course on the back nine, shooting a 36 to finish the day with a 76 (+4). He finished just three strokes behind Grove City’s Christian Locher, who took top honors, shooting a one-over 73.
Peter Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) joined Vassil in the top ten, finishing tied for eighth place, finishing with an 81. After shooting a 42 on the front nine, Franklin followed that with a 39 on the back nine to tie for eighth.
As a team, the Bison notched a fifth-place finish with a score of 368. Thomas More took the top team honor on the day, winning the event with a 315.
The Bison will return to action on Thursday, April 17 when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to participate in the Doug Rogers Memorial Invitational hosted by St. Vincent College. The event is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
