April, 9 – WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Bison softball team split a twin bill with Waynesburg University on Wednesday afternoon. The Bison dropped game one, 3-1, before getting a stellar pitching performance from Kiersten Conwell (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) in a 4-0 win in game two.
In game one, the Bison struck first in the top of the first inning as Jessica Kusnierz (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) reached base with a walk. After being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashlee Needy (Chicago, Ill./Marist), Kusinerz was driven home with a RBI double from Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) to make the score 1-0.
Waynesburg would respond in the bottom of the second inning, striking for three runs on three hits off of junior Kelsey Bish (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) to take a 3-1 lead.
After the three-run inning, Bish would settle down nicely, allowing just one hit over the next four innings of work. However, the Bison were unable to get a runner across the plate, stranding eight runners on base over the next five innings, and Bethany would fall in game one, 3-1.
Bish pitched well en route to her seventh complete game of the season, allowing just three earned and four hits over six innings of work, while striking out two.
In game two, the Bison once again struck first, scoring their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by Taylor Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) to make the score 1-0.
In their next at bats, Bethany would strike for another run in the bottom of the third. After a free pass was issued to Kelly, and she was moved to third on a single by Deanna Mihalco (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster), Coss knocked in her first RBI of the day, singling home Kelly to extend the lead to 2-0.
Coss was not done, however, as she added another RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Kylee Clark (Heath, Ohio/Lakewood) to expand the advantage to 3-0. The Bison would then add one more run in the home half of the sixth, as a Needy sacrifice fly scored Solomon to round out the scoring at 4-0.
Offensively for the Bison in game two, Coss, Solomon and Mihalco all tallied multiple hits in the game. Coss notched three singles and two RBI, while Solomon and Mihalco collected two hits each. For Coss, her 3-for-3 performance in the second game marked her first three-hit game of her Bison career.
On the mound, Conwell put together another quality start, going seven strong innings, allowing just five hits and seven total base runners while striking out four for her fifth win of the season.
The Bison will be back in action on Thursday, April 10 when they play host to Westminster. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
