Dec. 10 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Sophomore Kelly Goode (Pleasant Plain, Ohio/Little Miami) fired in 18 and senior Renee Brandenburg (Avella, Pa.) notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bethany women’s basketball team to a 76-63 victory over Denison Wednesday night.
The Big Red (3-3) scored the first hoop of the game, but that was answered by a 15-0 barrage from the Bison (2-6), with Goode scoring eight of those. Another string of three straight baskets by Goode sparked a 14-4 spurt that gave Bethany their largest lead of the night at 32-12. Denison was able to chip away and a Carolyn Simpson jumper as the halftime horn sounded cut it 39-26 BC at the break.
Goode poured in 16 by halftime to lead the Bison, who shot 52 percent (16-31) in the first stanza. They also forced Denison into 16 turnovers, which were converted into 17 BC points.
Bethany came out strong to start the second half, as senior Kaitlyn McCormick (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) had a three and Brandenburg hit a lay-up in the opening minute. The Big Red would answer with a run nearly as potent at the Bison’s in the first half. Denison tore off 13 consecutive points and when Hayley Dahlgard canned her second triple of the spurt, the Bethany lead had been cut to 46-42 with 12:50 to go.
The Bison would weather the Denison storm by turning to their seniors. Brandenburg had a pair of hoops during an ensuing 9-2 run by BC, which ballooned their advantage back to double digits at 55-44. After the Big Red moved within six, McCormick knocked down two free throws and a lay-up, which was followed by a basket from senior Susannah Cartland (Harvard, Ill.) to double the lead to 12. Brandenburg put the exclamation point on the win, which snapped a five-game losing streak, by scoring on an offensive rebound at the 2:39 mark and later completing a three-point play with 1:24 remaining.
Bethany finished the contest with season-bests in rebounding margin (41-32) and shooting percentage (52.5). Goode matched her season-high with the 18 markers, while Brandenburg collected her first double-double of the season and fifth in her career. McCormick had a good all-around game with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals and freshman Anne Wilson (Saegertown, Pa./Cambridge Springs) dropped in 11.
The Big Red, who has won four consecutive NCAC Tournament championships, was paced by Simpson with 16 points and eight rebounds and Caitlin Graessle with 11.
Next up for Bethany is a trip to Geneva on Saturday to take on the Golden Tornadoes. Tip-off time in Beaver Falls, Pa., is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
