Bethany Picked Fifth in PAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll

Nov. 8 - BETHANY, W.Va. –The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Preseason Poll was released Thursday and the Bethany College women’s basketball team was predicted to take fifth overall in the balloting by the coaches of the conference.

The Bison, who went 17-12 last year, finished fourth in the conference and advanced to the ECAC Tournament semifinals, picked up 55 points in the voting to edge out Westminster (51) and Thiel (46). Taking the final three spots were Grove City (36), Chatham (16) and Geneva (15).

Six-time defending champion Thomas More was picked to win the conference again this season by securing nine first place votes and 99 points to outdistance second place Saint Vincent (87 points, one first place vote). Rounding out the top four in the poll was Waynesburg with 78 points and Washington & Jefferson with 67.

“We graduated five seniors, including four starters, so that (position in the poll) is to be expected,” said head coach Rebecca Upton, who is going into her ninth season at the helm. “We’re young and inexperienced, even with our newcomers, so we are going to focus on improving every day and through the season.”

The Bison open the 2012-13 season at the Wilmington Tournament Nov. 16-17 and will take on the host school in the first round. Bethany’s home opener will also be its initial PAC contest of the year when BC hosts Waynesburg Nov. 28.
