Bison Fall in Shootout at Mount Aloysius
Dec. 10 - CRESSON, Pa. – Senior Kayla Taormina (Center Twp., Pa./Quigley) and junior Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) both recorded double-doubles but a hot-shooting Mount Aloysius side shot 56 percent in the second half to come back for an 80-71 win over the Bison Monday night in a non-conference match-up.
It was the Bison (4-6) who were better from the floor in the opening half, as BC shot 42 percent compared to 36 percent by the Mounties (4-4). The home team led by four, but Bethany scored 12 of the final 18 points in the period. Verrico (right) knocked down a three and senior Carly Garneau (Beaver Creek, Ohio/Carroll) had an old-fashioned three-point play to send the Bison to halftime with a 36-34 lead.
The lead changed hands between the teams five times in the first six minutes of the second half, with the final Bison lead coming on a three by senior Rebecca Braithwaite (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) with 15:34 left to give BC a 45-43 advantage. But that was answered by the Mounties with a 17-4 surge that put Mount Aloysius on top 60-49 midway through the second half.
Bethany made several attempts to cut into the deficit the rest of the way and managed to get within six points on three occasions. The last of those came when freshman Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio) made two foul shots with 2:02 left to make it a 76-70 Mountie lead. The Bison were unable to get any closer, as they only had one point the final two minutes and Mount Aloysius made its free throws to clinch the victory.
For Bethany, Verrico notched her first career double-double by totaling 17 points and 10 rebounds while also adding four assists. Taormina (right) registered her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards and Tipton set a career-high with 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and made four steals.
The Mounties’ effort was sparked by Becky Bard with 19 points and Lindsey Sammarco with 17.
The Bison will complete their first semester schedule Saturday with another non-conference tilt, as Hiram comes to Bethany for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
