Feb. 7 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Seniors Kaitlyn McCormick (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) and Caelyn DiSanti (Tarentum, Pa./North Catholic) scored 18 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the Bethany women’s basketball team to a 76-62 victory over Saint Vincent on Senior Day at Hummel Field House.

The triumph gives the Bison a season-best four-game winning streak and pushes the Green and White over the .500 mark for the first time this year at 11-10. The loss snapped the Bearcats’ four-game winning string and dropped them to 14-6.

BC’s four seniors were honored prior to the contest and the emotion carried over to the game. McCormick (eight) and DiSanti (five) provided 13 points during Bethany’s opening 15-7 run. Senior Susannah Cartland (Harvard, Ill.) flipped in a lay-up and another hoop from McCormick helped BC take their largest lead of the half at 21-11.

Saint Vincent answered back with a 15-3 run that saw them take a 26-24 advantage. After the teams’ exchanged baskets, another score by Cartland was followed by a jumper by freshman Anne Wilson (Saegertown, Pa./Cambridge Springs) just before halftime to give Bethany a 30-28 lead at the break.

The second half continued to be back-and-forth, with four ties and four lead changes in the first seven minutes. A Wilson jumper at the 12:50 mark put the Bison in front 43-41, a lead they would not lose again. They were up 47-45 at the midway point of the period when consecutive lay-ups from sophomore Stacy Goode (Pleasant Plain, Ohio/Little Miami) and McCormick was followed by a triple from Wilson to expand the margin to 54-45.

The Bearcats trimmed the BC lead to 64-59 with three minutes left, but Bethany turned to their seniors to help clinch the victory. Cartland drained two free throws on the ensuing possession to run the margin to seven. A couple minutes later, Wilson canned a pair from the foul line and sophomore Tara Harris (Zanesville, Ohio) scored a lay-up to swell the cushion to 70-59. The clincher came from DiSanti, who sank four free throws in the final minute to wrap up a memorable Senior Day.

Leading Bethany’s seniors was McCormick, who turned in the top effort for the Bison with 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. She added in four steals as well. DiSanti’s line featured 11 markers, six rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. Off the bench, Cartland chipped in with six points and two offensive rebounds and Renee Bradenburg (Avella, Pa.), saddled with early foul trouble, only had two points and two boards but also blocked three shots, which gives her exactly 100 in her career.

The Bison’s underclassmen also played a big role in the win. Stacy Goode fired in 12 points, while Wilson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Harris totaled eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds, which helped BC finish with a 57-39 advantage on the glass.

The Bearcats were led by Ashley Campbell’s 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals.

The game did not count in the PAC standings, as Saint Vincent is still in transition to Division III from the NAIA. However, Bethany was still able to take over sole possession of third place in the PAC due to Grove City falling to Thomas More Saturday, 73-40. The Bison will have to chance to put more distance between themselves and the Wolverines when they travel to GCC Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
