Gabrielle Naples' Career Day Not Enough In Bison’s 76-73 Loss to Thiel

Jan. 4 – GREENVILLE, Pa. – Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) scored a career-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Bethany College women’s basketball team (3-8, 2-2) fell to conference foe Thiel College (76-73) on Saturday afternoon.

The Bison would begin the first half jumping out to a four-point lead (8-4) at the 15:48 mark thanks to a Naples driving layup.

With the game knotted at 12- 12, Erin DiFalco would hit a three-point shot, giving the hosts a 15-12 advantage with 10:58 remaining in the first frame.

Then, trailing by three points (25-22) with little under five minutes to play in the first period, Bethany would end the half outscoring the Tomcats 15-3, en route to a 37-28 halftime lead.

The run was highlighted by Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), who scored six of the 15 points, while also recording one steal and one rebound.

The first half saw the Bison shoot 14-of-16 from the charity stripe, while the Tomcats didn’t attempt a single free throw.

The second half saw Bethany continue to hold the lead, pushing their advantage to ten points (57-47) after Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) drained a basket from beyond the arc with 11:27 left to play in the contest.

The Tomcats however, would begin to chip away at the Bison lead, pulling to within four points (67-63) with 3:56 remaining after a layup by Jacyln Watkins.

Bethany would quickly respond, pushing the lead back out to nine points (73-64) on a Naples basket at the 2:41 mark of the second half.

Thiel would then score the next nine points to tie the contest at 73, with 47 seconds left to play in the game.

After Bethany failed to score on their next possession, Thiel would take a 75-73 lead with just 23 seconds left after a pair of free throws were converted by Bethany Hines.

The Bison would have one last shot, trailing 76-73 with nine seconds left, but were unable to score, ultimately falling to the Tomcats, 76-73.

Naples led the Bison charge, scoring a career-high 24 points, while also registering six rebounds and two assists.

Joining Naples in the attack, were Schott and Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley). Schott, who recorded her third double-double of the season, scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Verrico notched 10 points and three rebounds.

The Bison are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 8, as they play host to Westminster College in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference showdown. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
