Dec. 30 – DELAWARE, Ohio – The Bethany College women’s basketball team (3-6,1-2 PAC) dropped a 78-54 decision to the University of Mount Union on Monday afternoon at the Bishop/Classic Hoops for Hope Tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
With the game tied at 2 in the early going, the Bison went on an 8-0 run, which was capped off with a layup by Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), to put the Bison up eight (10-2) with 15:21 left in the first half.
Mount Union countered with a 13-3 run, going up two points (15-13) on a basket by Abby Wenhoff at the 10-minute mark of the first frame.
The Bison responded quickly with back-to-back three-point buckets by Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) and Miklya Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) to reclaim the lead at 19-15 with 8:50 remaining.
With Bethany holding a one-point lead (23-22) at the 6:38 mark, Mount Union proceeded to go on a 12-1 outburst, gaining a 34-23 advantage with 4:10 left in the stanza.
The Bison would not go away however, as they began to chip away at the Purple Raider lead. Bethany would get a Schott layup and a pair of free throws by Tipton to cut the deficit to seven (34-27) with 2:57 remainig. However, Mount Union would enter intermission with a 36-28 halftime advantage.
The Purple Raiders outrebounded the Bison 27-19 in the first frame, which included 13 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points.
The second half saw Mount Union outscore Bethany 42-26, cruising to a 78-54 victory in the consolation contest.
Verrico, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, recorded her fourth double-double of the season. She notched a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Others helping out the Bison offensive attack were Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range), Schott, and Tipton. Naples and Schott both notched 12 points, while Tipton registered 11 points and four rebounds.
The Bison will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 2, when they play host to Franciscan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
