Bethany President Addresses Pittsburgh Area Alumni at PNC Park
Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller told Pittsburgh area alumni and friends gathered at the Pirates Tour Theatre Tuesday night that despite a "volatile, highly competitive marketplace," West Virginia's oldest degree granting institution is poised for a bright future.

Bethany President Highlights Successes and Goals in State of the College Address
Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller discussed “where we’ve been, the challenges and opportunities confronting us today, and our plans for the future” during his annual State of the College address Aug. 19 to faculty and staff in Commencement Hall.

Keeping College Affordable the Bethany College Way
Seventy-one students from Bethany College spent their summer on campus working a variety of jobs to help fund their education. They were recognized for their hard work at a picnic Thursday, August 14, at Christman Manor at Pendleton Heights, the historic home of Bethany President Scott D. Miller.

Course for Congregational Videographers, Historians to be Held at Bethany’s Buffalo Seminary
A seminar on creating local church videos will be held at Bethany College’s Buffalo Seminary September 12-13. The course will focus on both what to include in the videos, as well as how to create them using computer programs.

Bethany Broadcasting Network Announces 2014 Schedule
An aggressive and inclusive community, academic and sporting schedule has been announced by Bethany Broadcasting Network for this fall’s webcasts.
BBN Covers OVAC Pep Rally

The Bethany Broadcasting Network was at Bison Stadium Saturday, July 26, covering the pep rally for the Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Football Charity Classic. T.W. Phillips Memorial Library Hosts Meeting
Nearly 100 librarians gathered at Mountainside Conference Center earlier this summer for the spring conference of the Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia Chapter of the Association of College & Research Libraries. Attendees included T.W. Phillips Memorial Library staff members Heather Ricciuti, Director of Libraries & Learning Resources; Trevor Onest, Public Services Librarian; Heather Turner-Kaufman, Technical Services Librarian; and Sharon Monigold, Director of Historic Bethany & Archivist.

Library Anthropologist Nancy Fried Foster delivered the keynote address "Designing the Student-Centered Academic Library." The one-day meeting offered presentations on collection development, patron friendly spaces and services, outreach programs, and information literacy. The afternoon break featured poster session presentations including "College Libraries and Social Media Best Practices," co-presented by Meghan Philp '13 and her colleague Emily Mross, MLIS candidates at the University of Pittsburgh. Meeting participants concluded the day with a tour of the T.W. Phillips Memorial Library.

Bethany Represented at State Press Association Convention
Dr. Mort Gamble, Executive Assistant to the President, and M.E. Yancosek Gamble, Chair of the Department of Business, Communications and Media Arts, represented Bethany College Aug. 7-9 at the annual convention of the West Virginia Press Association at Canaan Valley Resort. They had an opportunity to visit with WVU President E. Gordon Gee at the opening reception, and various media leaders from throughout the Mountain State. Among the activities were awards given to top newspaper advertising campaigns. Business practices and trends in journalism were also addressed in the various sessions. The West Virginia Press Association will co-sponsor the Society for Collegiate Journalists Conference to be held at Bethany College, October 2-4, 2014.

Bethany's Phi Mu Recognized Nationally
Beta Nu Chapter of Phi Mu received six awards at their 2014 National Convention. They include Formal Recruitment Quota Award, Academic Honor Roll, Perfect 10 on Finance Portion of Commitment to Excellence for One Year of the Biennium, Perfect Risk Management Score on the CTE, Most Improved CTE Score, and 75th Anniversary Award. New Mail and Duplication Center
The mail and duplication center has recently been moved from Old Main to Morlan Hall.The mail center will also now have mail boxes for Bethany students, faculty and campus offices. Students will now be able to have mail sent directly to them at the College, and they will no longer need to purchase post offices boxes through the United States Postal Service. Students will receive their box number assignments via email. For a listing of department addresses, click here.

In her profile, Megan discusses how during her first year at Bethany, she truly discovered what Bethany is about. Dr. Patrick Sutherland, Professor of Communications and Media Arts, was profiled in the Small Programs Interest Group newsletter for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication this summer. To read the complete article, click here.

Spotlight on Trustee Bob McCann
Bethanian and trustee Bob McCann '80, Chief Executive Officer of UBS Group Americas, was recently featured in two publications. In the Washington Post article, McCann discusses that turnaround at UBS Group America. In a bizjournals.com article, he discusses the growth of the UBS service-support center in downtown Nashville.

Recent Grad Katherine Warren Completes Missionary Work in Africa
Katherine Warren '14 spent five weeks in Yako, Burkina Faso, in West Africa during July with the Sheltering Wings organization. Warren served as a missionary at Les Ailes de Refuge Orphanage. Some of the ministries she participated in were distributing TOMS shoes, distributing grain to widows, working at health clinics, and serving as a caretaker to many children.

"This has always been my dream," Warren said. "The opportunity was so eye-opening and touched my heart so deeply. I am confident that I am called to serve long-term overseas as a missionary as soon as I complete my masters in 2016. I encourage all who are presented with opportunities as such to act upon them. It will change your life." 


Three Bethanians Discuss the Importance of a Bethany Education
Bethanians Thomas Buergenthal '57, Bob McCann '80 and Kelly Sofka '10 are featured on the Council of Independent Colleges' website. They each were highlighted on the "Securing America's Future: The Power of Liberal Arts Education" section of the website. Save the Date: Charlotte Alumni Event
Please save the date as Dr. Miller will be traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, to meet with Bethany Alumni and Friends on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The event will be held at Dressler’s Restaurant from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Texas Alumni Connect
Dr. Miller and Senior Vice President Sven de Jong visited Bethany alumni and friends throughout the state of Texas July 29-31. Events were held in Dallas and Houston. On Tuesday, July 29, Ken Bado ’77 hosted the event at La Cima Club. The Houston event was hosted at the home of Jay ‘71 and Marsha (Peters) ’73 Smith on Thursday, July 31.

Bethany Celebrating the 14th Annual Allison’s Run
In conjunction with Homecoming 2014, the 14th Annual Allison’s Run, a conversational and recreational run or walk, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, beginning at the Cunningham Soccer Complex located at the intersection of Route 67 and Castleman’s Run Road. The cost is $20. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Those wishing to pre-register, sponsor, or donate to the raffle prizes for the race should contact the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations at (304) 829-7411 or alumni@bethanywv.edu.

Those who pre-register can also purchase raffle auction tickets in advance. Prizes last year included donations from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Heinz History Center and Washington Wild Things. Tickets are two for $1.00, 12 for $5.00, and 25 for $10.00. Those who pre-register and purchase Chinese auction tickets in advance will receive two additional tickets for free. The first 75 registrants will be given a complimentary T-shirt. Help us to remember the vibrant life of Jim Allison ’62 while raising money to support the scholarship that bears his name.


Bison Volleyball Eyes PAC Title In 2014
Riding the momentum of their third consecutive 30-win season, and their fourth-straight Eastern College Athletic Conference South Regional Championship, the Bethany College volleyball program is poised to capture its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship in 2014.

Bison Football Looks To Climb Conference Ladder In 2014
Entering the 2014 campaign, the Bethany College football team will look to a host of returning players to continue to move the program up the ranks of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The Bison boast 36 returning letterwinners and 19 starters from a year ago under second-year head coach Bill Garvey.

Bison Football Sees Six Former Standouts Honored On PAC 60th Anniversary Team
The Bethany College football program saw six former Bison standouts named to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s 60th Anniversary team, as recently announced by the PAC. The six former players who were named to the team of 60 athletes included; Matt Grimard (2014), Jeff Beer (1981), Matt Cruse (2010), Ray Hack (1963), Eric Walker (2012) and Denny Williams (1981).

Bison Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award
The Bethany College volleyball team has been honored with an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) team academic award for the 2013-14 season, as recently announced by the AVCA.

Abigail Hoard Named Assistant Athletic Trainer
The Bethany College Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Abigail Hoard as the new assistant athletic trainer.

Bethany Names Hrehor as New Head Field Hockey Coach
Bethany College Director of Athletics Brian Rose announced Friday the hiring of Kylie Hrehor as the new head field hockey coach for the 2014-15 academic year.
