College-Church Partnership Serves the Community
At the end of the spring semester, Nathan Tennant, a Bethany College freshman, took it upon himself to buy 25 small backpacks and fill them with food, which were donated to the Follansbee Senior Center’s after-school program. Program leader Mark Wagner handed out the backpacks to the children and said that they were delighted to receive these special gifts, spending joyful moments looking through the backpacks and trading items with each other. This food is a much-needed supplement for children in the Brooke County community who otherwise do not have enough to eat. Nathan is a 2012-13 recipient of an Alexander Campbell Scholarship and his service is part of his commitment to church leadership.

In addition, two large pans of breakfast sandwiches from Chartwell’s Food Service were donated and delivered to the Follansbee Senior Center. Left over from the Moonlight Breakfast on May 13, these delicious sandwiches would otherwise have been thrown away. Chartwell’s is now working in partnership with Bethany Memorial Church to deliver wholesome, left-over food to agencies and organizations that provide nourishing meals to needy citizens in Brooke County. Bethany College Chaplain Scott Thayer voiced his enthusiastic support of this initiative, adding that this will build bridges of friendship and good will between Bethany College, Bethany Memorial Church, and the community.

Bethany Completing NCAA Self-Study
The Bethany College Athletic Department has finalized the NCAA Self-Study, a document the Association requires every institution to complete once every five years. As part of the Study, Bethany would like to remind alumni, parents, and supporters of Bison athletics its definition of athletic success. Bethany views athletics as an opportunity to test one’s courage, mental and physical discipline and commitment to excellence. It is essential we realize it is through the process of trying to win that we grow and develop. It is through setting goals and overcoming challenges that our student athletes test themselves and achieve success both in the classroom and in athletics alike.
