Bethany College Announces 2013 Commencement Speaker
Ralph Baxter, chairman and chief executive officer of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, has been announced as Bethany College’s 2013 Commencement speaker. This will mark the college’s 173rd Anniversary Commencement Weekend.

Bethany College Baccalaureate to Feature Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan Jr.
Bethany College announces The Reverend Dr. Jack Sullivan, Jr., Regional Minister and President of the Pennsylvania Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), as speaker for the annual Baccalaureate service to be held Friday, May 17 at 6 p.m. in Commencement Hall, located in historic Old Main on the College campus.



Bethany Wins American Red Cross Campus Blood Drive Challenge
Bethany Alumna and Donor Recruitment Field Representative for the American Red Cross, Jennifer Fleahman-Rohrig '11, presented Tanner Coles (Bethany Campus Coordinator), Dr. Scott D. Miller (Bethany President) and Kody Niedzwiecki (the 2013-14 campus coordinator) with a trophy as the winner of the American Red Cross Campus Blood Drive Challenge between Bethany College and other local universities.

 

Kalon Honors Banquet Held
Dr. Darin Fields, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty and Sarah B. Cochran Professor of English, delivered an inspiring address to attendees at the Kalon Honors Banquet on Thursday evening in the Bethany Club. During the banquet, Kalon students were honored by Kathy Shelek-Furbee, Kalon Sponsor and Professor of Social Work, Program Director and Chair of the Department of Social Work.

Students honored included: Sean McLeod (Most Unique Project), Allison Snyder (Most Community Impact), Alanna Bebech (Kalon Spirit), seniors Corey Mays, Alex Tylka, Bethany Mullins, and Matt Paonessa, along with Emily Miner, Amanda Madurski, and Amber Ridings.

Honor Society Inductions Held
Emily King, Erika Steers, Erin Scrimger and Gerhard Schultze were inducted into the Delta Phi Alpha National Honor Society (German National Honorary) by Professor/Director of International Studies Harald Menz during an induction ceremony held in the Bethany Beanery on Tuesday.

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Spanish Honor Society also held an induction ceremony on Tuesday evening. Dr. Joseph Lovano, Professor and Chair of Humanities inducted Chelsea Sebetich, Olivia Pavlic, Gabriela Nunez, Alaina Heck and Jenna Clancy.


Cinco de Mayo Celebrated by Spanish Club
The Bethany College Spanish Club celebrated its annual "Cinco de Mayo" cultural event by serving a home-made taco dinner available to the greater Bethany College community on Sunday, May 5 at the Bethany Community Center in Bethany Park. Delicious Mexican-style chicken and beef tacos were prepared by the following Spanish Club Members: Dakota Maravelis, Jenna Clancy, Nici Rea, and Kaitlyn Tate. "Cinco de Mayo" is a cultural holiday, originally celebrated in the United States within the Mexican-American Community, which commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla, in central Mexico, on May 5th, 1862, in order to regain Mexico's independence.

 

Retirement Reception Held
After 25 years of service with the Japan Outreach Program at Bethany College, Sachiko Wood (center) announced her retirement at the end of the current academic year. Friends and colleagues celebrated her Bethany career with a reception in Benedum Commons.

 

 

Watch Championship Golf & Support Bethany Athletics
The PGA CHAMPIONS Tour returns to Pittsburgh in June and for the second consecutive year, supporters of Bethany athletics can purchase tickets to catch this exciting event and also help support their alma mater. Through this special offer, fans can purchase tickets for the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, which is scheduled for June 27-30 at the Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, and part of the proceeds will be given back to Bethany Athletics. This opportunity allows fans to purchase tickets for the practice rounds June 25-26, as well as a chance to buy a seat in the Fox Den. Overlooking the 16th green and 17th tee, the Fox Den offers an opportunity to upgrade from a grounds ticket. This open-air facility has table seating with views of golf, as well as an upscale food and beverage menu and bar available for additional purchase. Psychology
Kelly Schuller, Assistant Professor of Psychology and advisor to the brothers of Delta Tau Delta, reports that the fraternity raised over $3600 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during the Delt Dash event on Saturday, May 4th. Philanthropy Chair, Seth Myers, organized the JDRF Walk.

Social Work
Katherine Shelek-Furbee, Chair and Professor of Social Work, Melanee Wigton Sinclair, Associate Professor of Social Work, and Department Fellows, Melissa Davis (2012-2013) and Laura Biroschak (2013-2014) attended the WV-National Association of Social Work spring continuing education conference in Charleston on May 1st and 2nd.


Alumni Weekend 2013
Bethany College hosted its 2013 Alumni Weekend May 3-5. The weekend featured class reunion events, the Bethany football program’s Bison Golf Classic, The Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast honoring the senior women, and activities hosted by the Bethany Alumni Soccer Association (BASA).

The Class of 1963 returned to celebrate their 50th year reunion. Alumni Weekend officially got underway Friday afternoon with registration, followed by a welcome dinner. The evening concluded with the Student Art Exhibit Reception in Renner Art Gallery.

Saturday started with Breakfast with the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Attendees had the opportunity to take tours of campus before the Alumni Association Luncheon. The day concluded with the Alumni Awards Dinner and a reception at Christman Manor at Pendleton Heights.

The 2013 festivities ended Sunday morning with the Scroll Society Breakfast, which honored members of the class of 1963. In addition to the class of 1963, the classes of 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1968, and 1973 also celebrated reunions.

Bison Football Golf Classic
Bethany Football will host its annual Bison Football Golf Classic on Saturday, May 4 at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg. Donation to play in the outing is $100 which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, food and drinks on the course, and the post outing social at The Bison Inn. Young alumni (classes of 2009-2013) can play for a discounted price of $60. If you can join us, register online or to be involved as a sponsor of the outing, please contact Bill Garvey at wgarvey@bethanywv.edu. All proceeds go to benefit the Bethany Football program.

Bethany’s Kubis Named PAC Pitcher of the Week
After throwing a shutout in his final pitching appearance for the Bethany College baseball team, senior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Pitcher of the Week for May 6.

Kubis Gem Keys Bethany’s Season-Ending Split at Behrend
Making his final appearance on the mound for the Bethany College baseball team, senior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) made it a memorable one, as he struck out eight in twirling a complete game shutout in a 1-0 victory at Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon.

Prato & Gregg Wins Events at Slippery Rock Invitational
Bethany College junior Paige Prato (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) set one school record and qualified for ECAC Championships in another and junior Ben Gregg (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) won the javelin during Friday's Slippery Rock Invitational.
