As we begin 2009, we're thankful for a fulfilling and
rewarding 2008. Through the support of many alumni and other friends,
the last calendar year was exceptional for Bethany College. We enter
the New Year with more than $16 million committed to our transformative
campaign to secure the future of Bethany. Our goal is to grow the
enrollment and the overall resources as part of a comprehensive, strategic
master plan process now under way.
Even better, alumni participation increased from 17 to 22 percent—well
on the way to incrementally raising giving to 35 percent, in line
with that of peer institutions. My heartfelt thanks for your support.
Never has it been more important to support your alma mater. Your
gift to Bethany College can and will make a difference in the lives
of current and future students, ensuring the College's vitality and
dynamism for years to come.
2008 saw these singular achievements:
- The second-largest incoming class in 32 years.
I have pledged to increase enrollment to at least 1,000 within two
- New academic initiatives including
a partnership with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh; enrollment of
the first 11 “distance” learners in on-line classes;
the addition of the first master’s level course in autism;
expanded international study opportunities; and the launching of
a “2-plus-2” agreement with West Virginia Northern Community
- Recent National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
results in which Bethany students scored from 11 to 20 percentage
points higher than those in similar peer institutions
in key benchmark questions, validating the College’s reputation
as a highly effective undergraduate institution of national distinction;
- Enhancement of student-friendly amenities and facilities,
including the major addition of the Judith R. Hurl Education Center,
renovation and development of the new Bison Stadium Complex, expansion
and renovation of the Student Center and Bookstore, and the establishment
of a new 24-hour Fitness Center in the Cummins Community Center.
Among these and other signs of the College’s continued progress
and momentum, we look to the New Year for continued growth in enrollment,
a new building project in Cochran Hall and a newly-appointed Vice
President for Academic Affairs.
Now is the time, not only to recognize the impact
of a first-class education in your lives, but also to signal your
strong support to other vital funding sources, including foundations
and corporations, that we are not only committed to the future of
Bethany College, but also, dedicated to its continued excellence.
If you haven’t yet participated,
you may make your gift online
or by sending your check to Office of the President, Bethany College,
Bethany, WV 26032.
With best fiscal practice, sound planning, the continued vision and
innovation which have marked us from our founding, Bethany College
will indeed fulfill its mission as a small college of national distinction.
Happy New Year to all Bethanians and friends!
