Greek Organizations Garner New Members
Recruitment week for Greek Life was held last week at Bethany. Concluding with Bid Day on Friday, February 7.

Students got the chance to find out more about Greek life through open invitations throughout the fall semester, which were hosted by Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council.  In December 2013, Panhellenic Council began tweeting and encouraging women to “Go Greek” on Facebook pages.

During Recruitment Week for the men’s organizations, each fraternity is encouraged to host open house events for potential new members to meet the men and to learn more

about each organization. Panhellenic Council is structured to a much greater degree.  Each woman attended all three open houses. Through a mutually exclusive process, the women and the sororities narrowed down their choices.

Communication and Media Arts
Professor Dr. Patrick Sutherland, Professor of Communication, was named a 2014 National Association of Television Program Executives Foundation Faculty Fellow. Fewer than 30 applicants a year are accepted for the position. Faculty Fellows attend both a one-day Faculty Seminar on digital programming related to teaching issues/concerns, and a three-day professional conference for NAPTE members. The conference was held this year in Miami Beach, Fla.

Topics discussed at the workshops included upcoming changes in TV programming including news, global collaborations with U.S. faculty/TV professionals, and global partners such as China's Huace Film and TV Company; the integration of more social media platforms in TV news such as with Twitter; and talks with top executives from companies such as Netflix, GroupM, Weigel Broadcasting and The Lippin Group (Integrated Marketing).

Social Work
At its February meeting, the Commission on Accreditation for the Council on Social Work Education reviewed a self-study document prepared in spring 2013 by the social work department. After a careful review of the self-study document, a site visit report prepared following the September 2013 site visit, and the Program’s response to the prior items, the Commission voted to reaffirm the accreditation of the program for eight years, ending in February 2022.

This May marks 30 years of continuous accreditation for the social work program. Bethany is the only private college within the state of Wet Virginia with this accreditation. A celebration of the reaffirmation will be held during the annual Social Work Honors Banquet on Friday, April 25, beginning at 5 p.m. at Harder Hall (Mountainside Conference Center). Social work alumni are invited to attend and can RSVP for this event at socialwork@bethanywv.edu.
