Dr. David Ewing Named Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bethany
Dr. David W. Ewing has been named the new Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Bethany College, according to Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College.

At the meeting, Ridings, Franklin and Cooper made a brief presentation about how they used their 2013 Cooey-Davis Experiential Learning Fellowship money. Then Allison Snyder and Ruben Jared Roque were introduced as the 2014 Cooey-Davis Experiential Learning Fellowship recipients.


NCAA Div-III Week at Bethany Celebrated
Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College signed a resolution proclaiming April 7-13 as “NCAA Division III Week at Bethany College.” A member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, Bethany sponsors 22 intercollegiate sports and an Equestrian Club team. Accepting the resolution is Rhianna Petrone, Chair of Bethany’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and Brian Rose, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. The College's resolution is a part of a nationwide campaign to recognize the overall accomplishments of scholar-athletes and the value of Division III sports.

 

Bethany Celebrates Humanities Week
Students and faculty in the Humanities and related areas collaborated to create a week of activities on campus. Some events included a Greek dancing workshop, a study abroad fair, a taiko drumming lesson and an international movie night.

Bison Duo Excel in Zone Equestrian Competition

Katie Powell and Ali Malcanas both competed April 5 at equestrian Zone 6 Finals at Lake Erie College. The Bison ladies both placed ninth in their class, Walk/Trout/Canter individual and Open Flat individual, respectively.




Football FrenXi Raises Money for Autism Awareness

Alpha Xi Delta held its Football FrenXi Sunday, April 12 to raise money for Autism Speaks, the sorority's national philanthropy. All Bethanians were invited to the event at Hummel Football Field, where student teams competed against each other for the cause. The event raised $762, to make a total of $2,325.75 so far this year for the charity.

April is Autism Awareness month, and throughout the month the Delta Chapter will be spreading awareness on campus through multiple events.

Bethany Broadcasting Network (BBN) Hosts New Disciples of Christ Program
A new program debuted April 6 on BCTV (Bethany Broadcasting Network): "Words of the Discples of Christ" with host Dr. Larry Grimes (Professor Emeritus, Dean of the Buffalo Seminary and Director of Church Relations). The program airs from noon to 3 p.m. on April 6, 13, 27 and May 4. The series, also available on DVD, is presented "to help to understand the history, message, and ministry of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ."

Senior Recognized with Scholarship; Speaks on Bethany Experience at WVICU Annual Meeting
Shannon Marks, senior Communications and Media Arts major from Charles Town, W.Va., represented Bethany at the annual meetings of the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities (WVICU) April 8 at Stonewall Resort. Recipient of the Ogden Newspaper Publishing Scholarship through the WVICU Circle of Vision Scholarship Program, Shannon WVICU board members and independent-college presidents and guests. Shannon is pictured with WVICU Board member Cameron Nutting of Ogden Newspapers, daughter and granddaughter of Bethany Trustees Bob and Ogden Nutting, respectively.  In her presentation, Shannon outlined her career goals in integrated media and marketing. Dr. Mort Gamble, executive assistant to the president, also represented Bethany College at the day’s activities.

Bethany President Joins Celebration/Recognition of Distinguished Colleague
President and Mrs. Miller attended  “A Celebration/Recognition of the Pittsburgh Career of Dr. Marylouise ‘Weezie’ Fennell” at the home of Chatham University President Esther Barazzone (left) earlier this week.  as friends celebrated the Pittsburgh. Dr. Fennell (center), a noted international scholar and author,  former President of Carlow University, and currently Senior Counsel of the Council of Independent Colleges, will be moving to Florida this month.  Five years ago she was the Baccalaureate Speaker at Bethany and holds an honorary doctoral degree from the College. Weezie and Dr. Miller have collaborated on more than 100 columns for variously publications and have jointly published 11 books. Also pictured is Candace Introcaso, President of LaRoche College.

Physical and Computational Sciences
Doctors Scott Brothers and Joseph Walsh have been named National Academies Education Fellows in the Life Sciences for the 2013-2014 academic year. The honor is bestowed due to their selection to and enthusiastic participation in the 2013 Regional National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate STEM Education that was held June 2-7, 2013, at West Virginia University.


Register for the 2014 Golf Classic
The 2014 Bison Golf Classic will be held Saturday, May 3 at 8:30 a.m. at Highland Springs Golf Course. Golfers are asked to donate $100, and alumni who have graduated between 2011-14 are asked for $60. Money raised will go to the Bison football program. The outing includes a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf with a cart, lunch and beverages on the course, and a post-outing buffet and social. The winning team of four will receive a cash prize. Raffle, auction and door prizes will take place throughout the day. If you're interested in attending, register here.


Alumni Council Holds Spring Meeting on Campus
The Bethany College Alumni Council held its spring meeting on campus April 4-5.

The meeting began with a discussion/reception in the Academic Parlour with coaches and student-athletes.  They then attended a dinner in The Bethany Club, hosted by Ashley Kanotz, Director of Alumni and Parent Relations,  and ended Greek Sing – the final event of Greek Week.

Saturday started with a breakfast President’s Roundtable at Christman Manor hosted by President and Mrs. Miller. Council members received boxes of the new Christman Manor Bethany “brand” cookies that will be given out at special events.  Following Alumni Council Committee Meetings, they heard comments from Brian Rose, Director of Athletics and Recreation, on the growth and success of Bison athletics. 

The day concluded with planning sessions targeted at growing the newly endowed Larry E. Grimes Lecture Series and promotion of the Bethany Easter Egg Hunt. 


Alumnus Bob McCann Wins Wealth Management Bracket
After five weeks of voting by WealthManagment.com visitors, the winner of the 2014 Wealth Management Madness is Bob McCann '80, CEO of UBS Americas.

McCann is largely credited with turning around the fading fortunes of UBS' U.S. wealth management unit after he took over in 2009. More than 8,000 votes were cast in the online poll. To read the entire article, click here.

Offensive Explosion Propels Bison Past Grove City For Series Sweep
Using a seven-run third inning, the Bison baseball team (16-5, 7-2 PAC) grabbed their eighth-straight victory, defeating Grove City 15-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Men's Tennis Earns Sweep of Thiel
The Bethany College men’s tennis team captured their second conference victory of the season, rolling past Thiel College by a score of 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Softball Splits Twin Bill With Westminster
Behind a solid game one pitching performance from junior Kelsey Bish (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), the Bison softball team (9-13, 5-3 PAC) notched a split with Westminster College on Thursday. Bethany captured game one, 3-1, before falling to the Titans, 5-2, in game two.

Vassil Leads Bison Men's Golf at Bethany Invitational
Paced by a second-place finish from senior Ryan Vassil (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), the Bison men’s golf team posted a fifth-place finish at the Bethany Invitational hosted by Wheeling Country Club on Wednesday.

Bethany Lacrosse Stumbles Against Saint Vincent
The Bethany lacrosse team suffered a 15-6 decision at the hands of Saint Vincent College on Wednesday evening.

Bison Relay Teams Highlight Bethany Invitational
Led by the relay teams, who took three-of-four events, the Bison track & field programs performed well as they hosted the Bethany Invitational on Saturday.
