Bethany College Named One of the Top Ten Schools that Lead to Grad School
U.S. News and World Report recently named Bethany College to its top ten list of schools that produce alumni who attend graduate school within a year of graduation.

Bethany College Announces Speaker for MLK Day
Paulo Nzambi, senior vice president and COO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, has been as announced as the speaker for Bethany College’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration, on Monday, January 21, 2013.


Bethany College and BD&E Win Two 2012 Collegiate Advertising Awards

Winners of the national 2012 Collegiate Advertising Awards were recently announced and the team of Bethany College and BD&E of Pittsburgh received two gold awards.

The entries which earned the recognition were the college’s 2012 admissions postcard series as well as a brochure promoting Bethany's dual degree programs.

The Collegiate Advertising Awards is an elite program designed to recognize today’s most talented educational marketing professionals for outstanding excellence in all forms of advertising, marketing and promotion. Jeff FLick '82, serves as the President and CEO of BD&E.

President/Athletic Director at NCAA Convention
President Miller and Athletic Director Tim Weaver are attending the NCAA Convention through Sunday in Dallas, Texas.  They will also attend the Presidents Athletic Conference meeting in conjunction with the event.

ECHO Student Literary Contest
Bethany students are encouraged to submit their poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction to the ECHO student literary contest. The third annual Echo contest is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled at Bethany College, Heidelberg University, Hiram College, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, and Muskingum University. Each work will be judged as an individual entry, and entrants may win more than one prize. Prizes in each category will be $175, $100, and $50. Interested students may visit the ECHO contest website http://echocompetition.wordpress.com/ or contact Dr. Jessie Janeshek for more information. The deadline for entries is February 4, 2013.

Bethany President Attends Technology Briefing
Dr. Miller attended a technology briefing hosted by Ellucian president John Speer last week.  Ellucian is Bethany's administrative and academic software system provider through the Independent College Enterprise, a consortium of eight colleges in four states.  Speer spoke to improvements resulting from the merger of Datatel and SunGard, forming Ellucian.

Nominations Sought for President’s Awards
Bethany President Scott D. Miller is again seeking nominations from all campus constituencies for the President’s Awards for Excellence in Performance. One will be awarded to a member of the faculty and another to a member of the staff. Recipients will be announced during the annual Honors Day Convocation. Nominations should be sent directly to the President at President’s Office, Bethany College, Bethany, WV 26032.

Seglin ’78 Named to Top 100 List by “Trust Across America”
Bethany College alum Jeffrey Seglin ’78 was recently named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders in Trustworthy Business Behavior by “Trust Across America” for the second consecutive year.

Seglin, who is also the communications program director for the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, writes “The Right Thing,” a weekly column on general ethics that has been syndicated by Tribune Media Services since September 2010. Seglin lectures widely on business ethics and is regularly featured as an expert on ethics on CNN, CNBC, Fox 25 Boston, and other media outlets.

Give to Bethany College From Your IRA
Thanks to recent legislation, donors aged 70-and-a-half or older are once again eligible to “roll over” up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charitable organizations, such as Bethany College, without having to pay income taxes on the transfer. There are two special provisions:

1) Qualified distributions made by Feb. 1, 2013, may be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year.
2) A taxpayer who took a distribution from an IRA in December 2012 may make a contribution to a qualified charity before Feb. 1, 2013 and consider this a direct transfer.

Bethany Alumni Association Now Accepting Nominations for Alumni Awards
The Bethany College Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the annual Alumni Awards.  Award recipients are selected by the Internal Affairs Committee of Alumni Council from nomination forms submitted by alumni and friends of Bethany. Recipients will be honored at a banquet during Alumni Weekend festivities slated for May 3-May 5, 2013. Bethany Accepting Nominations for Alumnus of the Year Award
The Alumnus of the Year Award was established by the Office of the President to recognize outstanding loyalty and accomplishment by alumni of Bethany College. The award recognizes not one achievement, but is reserved for those who have attained and maintained excellence throughout their career and in their service to others.
Criteria/selection:

  1. Must hold a degree from Bethany College.
  2. Must demonstrate outstanding professional accomplishment and personal deeds on behalf of Bethany College.
  3. Nominations may come from all constituency groups of the College.  Nominations should be sent to:

  1. Nominations should be made in the form of a formal letter detailing the strengths of the nominee.
  2. The Director of Alumni and Parent Relations & President's Cabinet will serve as the screening committee for the award.

Bethany Women Clinch Winning Season with Sweep at Frostburg
By posting a 110-45 win over SUNY-Cobleskill (N.Y.) and a 97-87 victory over Frostburg State Wednesday, the Bethany College women’s swimming and diving team improved to 9-4 this season in dual meet competition and is assured of a winning season.

Bison Offense Held in Check in 63-51 Loss to Thomas More
The Bethany College men’s basketball team lost for the first time at home this season, as BC shot just 28 percent from the field in suffering a 63-51 defeat to visiting Thomas More Wednesday night in a battle between two of the top three teams in the conference.

Bethany Falls to 10th-Ranked Thomas More
The Bethany College women’s basketball team could not slow down PAC leading and 10th-ranked Thomas More, as the Saints came away with a 95-42 victory over the Bison Wednesday night.
