Selig Gives Commencement Address at Bethany
Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. “Bud” Selig challenged the 163 members of Bethany College’s Class of 2008 to embrace the challenge of making a positive impact on a rapidly changing world during his Commencement Address on Saturday, May 17.

Bethany Partners with WV Northern to Offer Courses at Northern Campuses
The presidents of Bethany College and West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) have formally signed agreements aimed at giving WVNCC students the opportunity to work toward a Bachelor’s Degree from Bethany in Education or Social Work. Bethany courses in these disciplines will be offered at WVNCC.

Old Main Journal Switching to Summer Schedule
The Old Main Journal will be switching from a weekly to a monthly publication schedule for the summer months. The next Old Main Journal will be released on June 20 with the second summer issue scheduled for July 18. The Old Main Journal will resume its regular weekly publication on August 15.

Wallace B. Neel to Associate Provost Post
Dr. Wallace B. Neel has been named Associate Provost of Bethany College, according to an announcement by President Miller and Provost Mihalyo. In this new role, Dr. Neel will provide oversight of the McCann Learning Center, the Office of the Registrar, the Mary Cutlip Center for Library and Information Technology Services, and Career Counseling and Placement. He will also provide general support to the Provost.

Since 1982, Neel has served Bethany College in a variety of roles including Dean of Professional Studies, Chair and Professor of Physical Education and Sports Studies and was formerly a coach and athletic director.

Bernard New Webmaster for W.Va. Media Group
West Virginia Media Management, LLC has announced the hiring of Jon Bernard to fill the position of Webmaster for the statewide media corporation. Bernard, a Communications major from Xenia, Ohio, will be working with each of the West Virginia Media properties to improve their internet presence. Bernard will be based in Charleston but will make frequent visits to all of the company’s locations to work with their news, sales and promotions staffs.

West Virginia Media operates television stations in Wheeling (WTRF-TV), Charleston (WOWK-TV), Clarksburg (WBOY-TV) and Beckley (WVNS-TV) along with The State Journal, a statewide business newspaper. Jim Forbes, Bethany College Adjunct Professor of Communication, is Managing Editor and Anchor for WTRF-TV.

Kappa Delta Sisters to Celebrate 85th Anniversary
The alumni sisters of Kappa Delta sorority will be celebrating the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Sigma Xi Chapter at Bethany College from June 6-8. A full weekend of activities has been planned by the Sigma Xi Graduate Council. Those events include a welcome luau reception, semi-formal dinner dance and Graduate Council elections.

Although Bethany’s Sigma Xi Chapter of the Kappa Delta sorority closed several years ago, a small group of sisters has remained active in celebrating events at the College. For information about the weekend or the Graduate Council, send an e-mail to SigmaXiGraduateCouncil@gmail.com.

Directors of Alumni/Parent, Church Relations Openings Posted
President Miller recently authorized the advertisement of two positions within the Office of Institutional Advancement. The job descriptions for the positions of Director of Alumni and Parents Relations and Director of Church Relations have been posted on the College's Web site.

Both positions will report to Sven de Jong, Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Inquiries should be directed to Mr. de Jong at sdejong@bethanywv.edu.

Cruse Runs in 400 Hurdles on First Day of NCAA's
Bethany College sophomore Matt Cruse (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) competed in his first of two events Thursday at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, running in the 400 hurdles at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Bison Break Two Records on Final Day of ECAC's
Sophomores Jodi Bodo (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville Catholic Central) and Matt Cruse (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) both broke school records as the 2008 ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close at Springfield (Mass.) College.
