Bethany College Presents Annual Honors Day Awards
Bethany College awarded many of its exemplary students with a variety of college-wide and departmental awards on April 17 during its annual Honors Day celebration. The recipients, selected based on their demonstration of outstanding scholarship and other contributions to the College, were presented with awards during the Honors Day Convocation held in Commencement Hall in Bethany’s historic Old Main.

Bethany Faculty, Staff Members Receive
President’s Awards for Excellence
Bethany College President Scott D. Miller presented one faculty member and one staff member with the President’s Awards for Excellence in Performance during the College’s Honors Day Convocation April 17. The awards, which are given to those who go “beyond the ordinary in their everyday positions,” were given to Heather Taylor, Coordinator of the Writing Center and Learning Specialist, and Dr. Harald Menz, Professor of World Languages and Cultures, Co-Chair of the Department of Humanities, Director of Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of International Studies, Miller announced.

Elizabeth Athol Selected as 2014 Bethany College Alumna of the Year
Elizabeth (Beth) Sweeney Athol, a 1982 Bethany College graduate and Pittsburgh attorney, has been named Alumna of the, according to Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College. She will be honored at the Alumni Weekend Awards Dinner in Commencement Hall on May 3.

Janeen Driscoll to Speak at Bethany’s 67th Annual Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast
Janeen Driscoll, a 1992 Bethany College graduate and public relations director for the United States Golf Association, will address the women of Bethany College’s graduating class at the 67th Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast. The annual event will take place Saturday, May 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the Ogden Dining Hall of Benedum Commons as part of the College’s Alumni Weekend 2014.


Bethany Holds Easter Egg Hunt

More than 60 children of alumni and the Bethany community came to campus for the Bethany Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 12. Hosted by the Student Alumni Association and The Grace Ryland & William Henry Robinson Children's Library, the event included many activities. Families checked in at the T.W. Phillips Memorial Library to decorate paper bunny ears and participate in jelly bean and M&M guessing games.

Boomer donned bunny ears and patched overalls for the event. Joined by the Bethany College dance team, Boomer led the Easter parade to the egg hunting area in Old Main’s lawn. Once all the eggs were gathered, the families headed to Old Main's corridor and Pennington Quadrangle for snacks and activities such as face painting, egg-cellent science demonstrations by the American Chemical Society student group, flower bulb painting, and a sensory prize box game. All children who returned their eggs were given crayons and an original Boomer coloring book, which had drawings of the mascot that were created by current Bethany students.



Business & Economics and Accounting Clubs
Raise Money for Clean Drinking Water
This spring semester the Business & Accounting and the Economics clubs baked and sold cupcakes and cookies to raise funds for the Children's Safe Drinking Water Initiative. The clubs successfully raised $252.  Every penny raised provides a liter of clean drinking water for a child in regions of the world where clean drinking water is scarce or unavailable.

The funds raised will provide 25,200 liters of clean and safe drinking water. Pictured faculty advisor Dr. Anju Ramjee, Kimberly Judy, Kaitlin Perch, Amber Ridings and Andrew Parsons.




Bethany Celebrates National Library Week
The T.W. Phillips Memorial Library at Bethany College celebrated National Library Week on April 16 with boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts for all patrons. President Miller Attends PAC Meeting
On April 16, President Miller attended the spring meeting of the Presidents' Athletic Conference President's Council at the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh. Long-time colleague Dick Jewell, center, president of Grove City College, was recognized as he retires. President's Roundtable
Student leaders joined President Miller April 16 in the Parlour of Phillips Hall for the President's Roundtable, sponsored by the Bethany Broadcasting Network. BBN's Dylan Blaschak, a junior Integrated Marketing and Media major from Fox Chapel, Pa., served as moderator. Blaschak is also active in Beta Theta Pi and is editor of The Tower online.

Also in attendance were Student Government Association President Jacob Fisher and current candidates for the office Kyle Rockey and Jared Roque.




Student Government Association Names
Professor of the Year

Adam Fletcher, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, was named Bethany College Student Government Association Professor of the Year in a ceremony in the Academic Parlour of Old Main. History and Political Science
Dr. Marc Sable, Associate Professor of Political Science, attended the 20th Annual Conference of the Association for Core Texts and Courses.  He presented a paper entitled "Friendship in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and in the Lives of Today’s Students," which reflected upon his teaching experiences at Bethany.  He also attended panels on the relationship between teaching the great books and interpreting them.

Library
Heather Ricciuti, the Mary Cutlip Director of Libraries & Learning Resources, attended the Appalachian College Association Spring Library Director’s Meeting on April 10-11 in Knoxville, Tenn. Library directors representing member colleges of the ACA discussed resources and services provided by the Bowen Central Library of Appalachia including space planning, assessment and upcoming ACA programs.


Alumnus, Former Basketball Coach Honored
Kendall "E.K." Hayes '80, who is a former boys basketball coach at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill, Md., received the honor of having the school's new gym floor named after him. Hayes retired last year after 21 seasons. He won 423 games and led the Panthers to nine state tournament appearances, including the 1995 Group AAA state title. Kendall Hayes Court will be officially dedicated in December when Potomac hosts its annual regular-season opening Chip Lozinak Tournament. At that time, plaques with pieces of Potomac’s old gym floor will be given out to honor the occasion.

Alumnus Representing First Christian Church at Gathering
Dave Hosseini  '79 will be a delegate at the 160th Annual Gathering of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Northern  California- Nevada from May 2 to May 4. Dave will represent First Christian Church, Sacramento.

Register for the 2014 Golf Classic
The 2014 Bison Golf Classic will be held Saturday, May 3 at 8:30 a.m. at Highland Springs Golf Course. Golfers are asked to donate $100, and alumni who have graduated between 2011-14 are asked for $60. Money raised will go to the Bison football program. The outing includes a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf with a cart, lunch and beverages on the course, and a post-outing buffet and social. The winning team of four will receive a cash prize. Raffle, auction and door prizes will take place throughout the day. If you're interested in attending, register here.

Gene Steratore to Speak at Bethany SAAC Banquet
The Bethany College athletic department and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are pleased to announce that current National Football League (NFL) referee and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball official Gene Steratore will be the special guest speaker at the annual SAAC banquet to be held on Sunday, April 27.

Bison Perform Well In PAC Quad South
The Bethany Track & Field teams performed well on Wednesday, as they hosted the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Quad South Meet. The men finished second with 130 points, while the women were able to notch 75 points en route to a third-place finish.

Bison Break Out The Lumber In Split With Geneva
Highlighted by an eight-run first inning in game number two, the Bison softball team (12-14; 8-4 PAC) registered a split with Geneva College. Bethany dropped game one, 6-2, before notching a 13-2 win in game two.

Bish/Schooley Named SAAC Athletes of the Week
Bison softball pitching ace, junior Kelsey Bish (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and tennis athlete, junior Dylan Schooley (Washington, Pa./Trinity), have been named the Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Athletes of the Week, announced the Bethany SAAC on Tuesday.

Zac Edmiston Named PAC Pitcher of the Week
After collecting his first win of the season last week, Bethany College junior Zac Edmiston (California, Pa./California) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 14.
