Spanish Club Learns, Dines in Pittsburgh
Twelve current students of the Bethany College Spanish Club, led by Club President Dakota Maravelis, and accompanied by Club Advisor Dr. Joseph Lovano, Dr. Anju Ramjee, Dr. Marc Sable, and two past language club presidents, alumni Meghan Philp ‘12 and Catherine Papp ‘12, enjoyed a wonderful cultural trip to Pittsburgh this past Saturday, Oct. 5. 

The club experienced a guided tour of the fascinating "Nationality Rooms" at the Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh and also dined in authentic Spanish fashion at the Mallorca Restaurant on the South Side of Pittsburgh.

Buffalo Seminary Events
Buffalo Seminary at Bethany College is planning two workshops in the near future:

  • The Lord’s Supper in the New Testament - Oct. 28 and 29
    Presented by Rev. Dr. Bonnie Thurston
  • Introduction to Pastoral Care and Counseling - Feb. 21 and 22, 2014
    Presented by Rev. Dr. Victor L. Hunter, Senior Minister at First Christian Church, New Martinsville, W.Va., and Rev. Wesley Howsare, Senior Minister at First Christian Church, Moundsville, W.Va.

Social Work—Helping Heroes Project
The senior social work class and faculty members participated in a Governor’s Day of Service on Monday, Sept. 30. The project was funded by a grant from the West Virginia Governor’s Day of Service. Nine students and two faculty members were engaged in the project. Students completed minor indoor repairs, stained and waterproofed a rear deck, and constructed a small patio area.

Social Work and Career Counseling& Placement—MAP and VAN Projects
The Social Work department and Office of Career Counseling and Placement are sponsoring two professional development experiences over the academic year. The first program, Meet A Professional [MAP] brings professionals from the tri-state area to campus to meet with students, share their professional experiences, and advise students on courses or activities that will best prepare them for careers. The first MAP event occurred on Oct. 2 and featured trustee and alum Marc Chernenko ‘78, a Wellsburg attorney. Six faculty members and 15 students attended the dinner presentation and learned about career opportunities in the criminal justice field.

The second program, Visit an Agency Now [VAN] provides a monthly opportunity for students to visit agencies and businesses in the tri-state area. A van will leave campus at 3:30 p.m., travel to the agency or business for a one-hour tour and presentation, and return to campus in time for dinner. The first VAN event is scheduled at Florence Crittenton Services on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Social Work—Grief Training
Katherine Shelek-Furbee, Chair and Professor of Social Work, and Melanee W. Sinclair, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Field Placements, accompanied nine students to a continuing education experience on grief work. The workshop took place on Oct. 3 at the Christ United Methodist Church in Wheeling. The event was jointly sponsored by the Social Work Program, Kepner Funeral Home and the Brooke County Health Department. Approximately 30 professionals and students attended the event. William Hoy, Ph.D., a specialist in grief work, presented during the three-hour workshop.

Humanities—English
Dr. Jessie Janeshek, Assistant Professor of English, has four poems published in Volume 22 of the journal Word For/Word.

Phi Kappa Tau Plans Reunion Nov. 1-3

Bison Veto Presidents - Defeat W&J, 24-19
For the first time since head coach Bill Garvey was eight years old, the Bethany football team (2-3, 2-1 PAC) defeated the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson. The team used 200 total yards from Phil Acrie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsley), and an interception in the end zone in the waning seconds of the game by Aaron Frye (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) to come out on top, 24-19.

BCVB Remains Unbeaten In PAC, Topples Titans, 3-2
The Bethany College volleyball team got a great game from Westminster College, but used a solid all-around effort to come from a 2-1 deficit, to defeat the Titans, 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-12).

Bison Women's Tennis Drops 8-1 Decision To Franciscan
The Bethany women’s tennis team was defeated, 8-1, by Franciscan University on Thursday.

Women's Soccer Suffers OT Loss At Westminster
Freshman Cheyann McQuain (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) recorded 11 saves but the Bethany College women’s soccer team fell, 1-0 in overtime at Westminster on Wednesday evening at Harold Burry Stadium.

Men's Soccer Plays To A 1-1 Draw At Westminster
The Bethany College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at the Westminster soccer field.

Grimard Named ECAC Southwest Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Bethany College senior quarterback Matt Grimard (Lowell, Mass./Dracut) has been named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Southwest Corvias Co-Offensive player of the week announced the ECAC on Tuesday.

Mandt Earns Player of the Week Award
Bethany junior Lynsie Mandt (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) has been named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Week announced the conference office on Monday.
