Bethany College Observes Founder's Day
Bethany College’s heritage and history as the oldest degree-granting institution in West Virginia were in the spotlight Thursday, March 6 as the College celebrated its 168th anniversary. A Convocation and wreath-laying ceremony highlighted the annual Founder’s Day ceremonies.

Bethany Choir Presents Lenten Concert
The Bethany College Choir, under the direction of Professor David J. Rudari, will present a concert for the Lenten season at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling.

Math and Science Day Competition Held at Bethany
Bethany College’s Math and Science Club (MCSC) will host the Second Annual Math and Science Day Competition for high school students on March 7 at the Mountainside Conference Center beginning at 9 a.m.

Bethany Professors Attend Workshop
Dr. Anju Ramjee, Professor of Economics & Business and Dr. Joseph Lovano, Professor and Chair of World Languages & Cultures attended and participated in the "CIBER 2008 Workshop for Language and Culture for International Business" at the University of Memphis, on February 21-23, 2008.

This workshop offered participants valuable insights into the relationship between world language and international business, discussed how to develop a business language curriculum, and explored the resources available to the world language educator interested in this field. Attendance and participation in this most informative workshop was made possible by the competitive Bethany College Faculty Development Grant Program.

President Miller and Vice President de Jong
Attend Higher Education Day at the W.Va. Legislator
Dr. Miller and Vice President de Jong attended Higher Education Day at the Legislator in Charleston last week. Dr. Miller and other presidents met Governor Manchin for a proclamation presentation. The presidents were then recognized by the Senate and House. During their visit they also met with representatives of the West Virginia Economic Development and Small Business Administration offices. Additionally, private meetings were held with Senators Bowman and McKenzie.

Bethany Students Attend NACA Conference in St. Louis
Seven Bethany College students were among the 2,500 student delegates from 240 colleges and universities in attendance at February’s National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) conference in St. Louis, Mo. The goal of the NACA foundation is to develop and provide educational programs and services for college and university students, professional staff and others interested in campus activities.

Student delegates spent three days listening to presentations from more than 220 different acts and vendors. Presentations ranged from musical performances to speakers on such topics as living with AIDS and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. The seven Bethany students — Brandon Agostini, Darcy Brand, Jered Carlson, Laurie Conway, Logan Kowcheck, Luke Luallin and Bethany Stickradt — were accompanied on the trip by advisor Brian Fernandes and graduate assistant Amber Zifzal.


Alumni News
Classical Guitarist's Article Published
Classical guitarist Chris Anderson, a Bethany College alumni of the class of 1976, recently had an article published in Classical Guitar Magazine. The magazine is based in England and is widely regarded as the world's leading print media outlet in its area of interest. His article entitled, "Thoughts on When to Change Strings and Pitch Instability" appears in the March 2008, volume 26, no. 7 issue.

Chris also maintains an active performance schedule. His recent concerts have included dates in Washington DC, Baltimore Md., Richmond Va., Pittsburgh Pa., Wilmington De., as well as many other towns scattered throughout the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Charleston Alumni Event
President Miller and Vice President de Jong met with alumni and friends of Bethany during a reception in Charleston, W.Va. Dr. Miller was able to share his vision for Bethany’s future. A number of alumni, friends and members of the West Virginia legislature attended the event. This event was made possible by trustee Marc '78 and Judge Joyce Dumbaugh '78 Chernenko.

Florida Alumni Events
President Miller was accompanied by Vice President de Jong for alumni events and meetings in the state of Florida. Alumni and friends gathered in Tampa (sponsored by Neil Kiefer '73), Fort Meyers (sponsored by William Hoag) and Boca Raton. Dr. Miller met numerous alumni that spanned the generation from the class of 1940 to the class of 2000.

Directors of Alumni/Parent, Church Relations Openings Posted
President Miller recently authorized the advertisement of two positions within the Office of Institutional Advancement. The job descriptions for the positions Director of Alumni and Parents Relations and Director of Church Relations have been posted on the College's website.

Both positions will report to Sven de Jong, Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Inquiries should be directed to Mr. de Jong at sdejong@bethanywv.edu.


Bison Athletics
Bethany Falls in NCAA Opener 92-70 at #20 Capital
The Bethany College men’s basketball team had as large as a seven-point lead in the early going, but #20 Capital (Ohio) University recovered to build an 18-point halftime advantage and go on for a 92-70 victory over the Bison Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Bethany's Jackson, Adams Receive All-PAC Distinction
After guiding his team to the regular season and tournament championships, Bethany College senior Brody Jackson (Akron, Ohio/Manchester) was named the 2007-08 PAC Player of the Year when the all-conference teams were announced Tuesday.

Four Bison Women Earn All-PAC Honors
The Bethany College women’s basketball team had four players receive All-PAC honors when the league announced its all-star teams during the conference tournament over the weekend.
