Communications and Media Arts
Patrick J. Sutherland, professor of communications and advisor to WVBC Internet Radio in the Department of Communications and Media Arts, recently had a chapter of his writing accepted for publication. The chapter is titled "ESPN: Television Transforms Sports Culture" and is set for inclusion in a three-volume book, American History Through American Sports, edited by Danielle Coombs and Bob Batchelor. The publisher is ABC-CLIO.

Sutherland also attended the 2011 Annual Convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC)) held in August in St. Louis. And in his role as chair of the Town of Bethany's Main Street Revitalization Committee, Sutherland attended summer meetings with West Virginia State Government officials in Charleston, W.Va., at the Division of Culture and History and Main Street WV/On Track Program.

Visual and Performing Arts
Assistant Professor of Music Pandel Collaros has installed Auralex studio foam in the Steinman Hall Audio Recording Studio and Control Room. The acoustic treatment for these rooms was made possible by a generous contribution from Thomas Furbee, director of media services, who is also a musician and audio engineer.

Luke Hardt, chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and director of Bethany College Theatre, reports that he can now honestly say, "I'm not a doctor but I played one on TV!"  His professional work this summer included playing a surgeon in a television commercial, as well as work on the movies "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," which stars Emma Watson, and "Steeltown," which stars Maggie Gyllenhaal.
