Professor Lovano Receives Award at Fall Convocation
Dr. Joseph B. Lovano, chair of the department of humanities and professor of world languages and cultures at Bethany College, received the International Association of University Presidents’ 2012 International Education Faculty Achievement Award on Sept. 13 at Fall Convocation.

Bethany Continues to Rank Among First-Tier National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News and World Report
Bethany College has once again ranked among first-tier national liberal arts colleges according to a report released this morning by U.S. News and World Report.

Prominent Pittsburgh Medical Leader Addresses Bethany College Fall Convocation
Dr. G. Daniel Martich, a prominent leader in the Pittsburgh medical community, was the keynote speaker at Bethany College’s Fall Convocation on September 13, according to Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College.

Bethany College Theatre to Present “Hidden in This Picture”
The Bethany College Theatre will present Aaron Sorkin’s “Hidden in This Picture” on Sept. 13-16 in the amphitheatre behind Steinman Hall.

Bethany College to Commemorate Constitution Day
William J. Curran, III, distinguished lecturer in political science, will give a talk titled “Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll … and Guns: What Rights Should the Constitution Protect” at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17 in the Academic Parlour in honor of Constitution Day. Curran will discuss the intersection of contemporary social issues as they relate to the Constitution. Constitution Day is a federal observance commemorating its signing on Sept. 17, 1787.

Annual Agency Fair to be Held Next Friday
The Bethany College Service Learning Center is hosting the annual Agency Fair next from 1-4 p.m. next Friday, Sept. 14 in Commencement Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and agency representatives from a dozen local agencies will be available to inform about their volunteer, service project and internship needs.

The Service Learning Center/Fine Arts Program/Dean of Faculty will also co-host the Arts Reception from 4-6 p.m. in the Renner Art Gallery. The show features past and present work of colleagues Kenn Morgan and Aaron Anslow.

American Red Cross Blood Donation Set
Bethany College’s Sophomore Class Council and the American Red Cross from 1-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 will be accepting blood donations in the Agostino Room on Benedum Commons (the back dining room).

Donors will be entered to win a Bethany College hoodie, a $50 Wal-Mart gift card and a $25 Sheetz gift card. The organization with the most donors will also receive $50.

Pre-registration is encouraged this year to ensure a shorter wait-time. Registration can be done by emailing Tanner.Coles@redcross.org.

Two Faculty Members to be Installed as Endowed Chairs
Dr. Brooke Lemmons Deal, associate professor of religious studies, and Kenneth Morgan, professor of fine arts, will be installed as endowed chairs at 4 p.m. on Sept. 18, 2012 in the academic parlour of Old Main. Deal will be installed as the Thomas W. Phillips Chair of Religious Studies, and Morgan will be installed as the Jennie Steindorf Renner Chair of Fine Arts.   

Bethany Alumni Artists Invited to Submit Work
The department of visual and performing arts, the office of student life and the office of alumni and parent relations invites Bethany College alumni to submit works of art in any medium to the Bethany Alumni Biennial Art Exhibition, “A Show of Hands.” The exhibition will be displayed Sept. 20 through Oct. 6 in the Renner Art Gallery. The first such event was held 16 years ago and has continued every few years since then as part of homecoming weekend.

All alumni are invited to submit four pieces of work to Kenn Morgan at the Renner Art Gallery, Bethany House, Bethany, W.Va., 26032, by Sept. 18. Artists should label their work with their name, graduation year, address and phone number, title, medium and price, or not for sale value. Bethany does not receive a commission on sales.

Heilmeier ’86 Announced as New Phi Kappa Tau Foundation Trustee
Greg Heilmeier ’86 on May 11 was appointed as a trustee to the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation Board. His newest volunteer role started once his national president term ended in July at the conclusion of the 60th National Convention in Nashville, Tenn. Heilmeier said he has two initiatives: to work until every one of the chapters has its bronze shield in the Centennial Garden, and to help them all develop their Cornerstone Campaigns.

Robinson ’98 Promoted Within TLC Television Network
Bethany alum Jhamal Robinson ’98 was recently promoted by Discovery Networks and will become the new vice president of production management for The Learning Channel. Prior to his promotion, Robinson was the head of production 3rd party for Yahoo!

Bethanian Nick Winowich ’49 Featured in Charleston Gazette
The Charleston Gazette on Sunday featured an article with Bethany alum Nicholas Winowich ’49. As a Pittsburgh native and a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, he served the Kanawha County Public Library for 30 years. The article includes a number of life anecdotes told by Winowich.

Bethany Accepting Reservations for Homecoming Tailgate Tent Space
The Office of Alumni & Parent Relations is now accepting reservations for tailgate tent space to be utilized during the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 6. The cost for a 10 x 10 area is $20. Due to limited space each group will be restricted to one tent only. Bethany Celebrating the 12th Annual Allison’s Run
In conjunction with Homecoming 2012, the 12th Annual Allison’s Run, a conversational and recreational run or walk, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, beginning at the Cunningham Soccer Complex located at the intersection of Route 67 and Castleman’s Run Road. The cost is $20. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Those wishing to pre-register or sponsor the race should contact the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations at (304) 829-7411 or alumni@bethanywv.edu. Bethany Field Hockey Beats Transylvania in OT for First Win
Freshman Kaitlin Perch (Hackettstown, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Bethany College field hockey team won its first game since returning to varsity status with a 2-1 victory over Transylvania (Ky.) University Sunday morning in the consolation game of the Frostburg State Tournament.

Bison Men Take 1st Win of the Season with 1-0 Shutout
Junior Lamine Balde (Guinea/William L. Sayre) scored the game-winning goal with just under 20 minutes to play and freshman keeper Skylar Kinnard (Sistersville, W.Va./Tyler Consolidated) stopped 13 shots to lift the Bethany College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Wooster Tuesday afternoon.

Lindenfelser Strikes Gives Bison 2-2 Draw with Pitt-Greensburg
Senior Julie Lindenfelser (South Park, Pa.) scored two goals, including the game-tying score with just under eight minutes left in regulation, and the Bethany College women’s soccer team came away with a 2-2 draw with Pitt-Greensburg Wednesday afternoon.

Bethany Suffers 6-3 Loss at Waynesburg
Senior Maria Vallone (Rochester, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) improved to 3-1 in singles and doubles play, but Waynesburg would come away with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Bison women’s tennis team Tuesday afternoon.

Fresh off Bye Week, Bison Head to Randolph-Macon Saturday
After taking its bye week to digest a tough opening week loss, the Bethany College football team returns to the field Saturday with a non-conference road game at Randolph-Macon (Va.) College. Kickoff in Ashland, Va., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
