BETHANY, W.Va. – Dozens of Bethany College students spent their lunch Monday to complete service projects as part of the college’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance.
During lunch on Jan. 20, students created Valentine’s Day cards for senior citizens and thank-you notes to veterans and created tie-blankets. Bethany College sororities also are expected to create more blankets and additional cards.
The blankets will be donated to an area shelter, and cards will be sent to Peterson Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Wheeling, said Marlo Trabert, coordinator of student activities and volunteer services.
The college also unveiled a campus-wide initiative called #GreenerBethany. The program divides the campus into 20 zones for student groups to improve. Cash prizes will be awarded to the organizations that make and document the biggest improvements.
One group, for example, plans to install a flower bed near the Ogden Dining Hall.
In addition to the service projects, Bethany hosted a daylong movie marathon in Wailes Theatre, and a celebration and reflection of Martin Lutheran King, Jr., at Bethany Memorial Church.
