Student Spotlight: Michael Ainsworth

Bethany College senior Michael Ainsworth meets former Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis after the filming of the "Jerome Bettis Show."

A Pittsburgh native and sports enthusiast, Michael Ainsworth was humbled to be behind the scenes of the “Jerome Bettis Show” at WPXI, and he was even more amped up when his Sports Information Directing class stayed after to talk to Bettis one-on-one.

Michael wouldn’t have guessed he’d be rubbing elbows with the former football star four years ago, because, like many freshmen, he wasn’t sure which direction his college career was going. He said hard work and dedicated professors helped him forge his own path.

“Professor M.E. Gamble has been working with me since I was a freshman. Without her, I would probably still be trying to figure out what major to choose and what classes I needed to take,” Michael said of the Assistant Professor of Communications and Media Arts and Chair of the Department.

But another key to success, Michael said, was going out of his comfort zone and trying new things. He’s currently the president of his fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi; he’s played football for Bethany all four years of his undergraduate career; he is part of the College radio station, BCTW-14; and he is an intern for the town of Bethany. “If it interests you, try it,” he said.

Bethany allowed Michael the opportunity to do just that, and that’s what drew him to the College in the first place. “I just got a good vibe from the campus, and it is small enough where I could try to get involved.”

A lot of involvement means a lot more work, however, and Michael said sometimes he was “juggling a million and one things at once,” but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I just try to get a day ahead of my work so I am never scrambling at the last minute to try to get stuff done,” he said.

He plans to put his Sports Communications degree to use after graduating in May, and hopes his experiences at Bethany, from working at the radio station to perfecting time management, will help him land his dream job.
