Major: Psychology and Social Work

social work.jpgSarah London, a double major in Social Work and Psychology, recently completed her senior placement at the Robert C. Byrd Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. The Center is the Ohio Valley’s only hospital-based inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric and behavioral health facility.

During her placement, London was responsible for completing safety plans as well as discharge planning for all placements.

“A safety plan exercised my skills of one-on-one interviewing, establishing positive rapport with patients and displaying empathy,” said London. “With discharge planning, it was crucial that I set up follow-up appointments with a psychiatrist as well as a therapist for each patient before their discharge date. This responsibility enabled me to become better at speaking professionally on the phone, meeting deadlines and documenting appointments.”

As a social work major, London is required to complete four placements in the field. London stresses that her involvement with the Social Work Department, as well as the Psychology Department, propelled her to be successful at her placement.

“In order to reach this step in my social work career at Bethany, I was required to do three field placements prior to my semester-long placement,” said London. “During these placements, I would reflect on my work, as well as get great experience working in the field. This entailed one 30-hour and two 50-hour field experiences which I was able to complete and become more comfortable working in the field.”

In addition to her academics, London is also involved in athletics. She is a four-year starter for the Women’s Soccer Team, with this past year being named to the PAC Honor Roll, as well as a captain. In addition, she is a Kalon scholar, which recognizes students who possess a special leadership potential. She is also a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and a member of the Student Alumni Association.

After graduation, London plans to attend graduate school to receive her Master’s Degree in Social Work, with a focus in Clinical Therapy.
