Fall 2017: Visited Fiji Islands for the emergence of their 8-year cicada.

Spring 2015: Sabbatical: In India for two months to help university (BHU) and government scientists edit manuscripts for publication in English in international journals. Collaborating on an annotated bibliography on nanotechnology & agriculture.

Fall 2015: John R. Taylor Memorial Award in the Liberal Arts.

Fall 2013: Appointed to a NSF Panel to evaluate grant applications, 2013-14, and previously.

Summer 2013: Spent 2 months in India editing research manuscripts and other documents for Indian colleagues.

Spring 2013 – 2015: Appointed as the Bethany College Representative to the Board of the West Virginia Space Grant Consortium (NASA).

Fall 2012: Presented to the ACA Summit section on Global Awareness on the development of my new course, Ecology of the Amazon.

2011 Appalachian College Association $5,000 Grant, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Faculty Led Study Abroad Mini-Grant: to develop a course, Ecology of the Amazon. Attended the related ACA training workshops. This grant and other funding allowed two Bethany College students and me for 2 weeks to visit Tahuayo Lodge in the rainforest on the Tahuayo River, a tributary of the Amazon, near Iquitos, Peru.

2009 Bethany College President’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Performance.

2009 National nomination for Carnegie Foundation/CASE Professor of the Year.

2008 Finalist for the West Virginia Professor of the Year Award of the West Virginia Merit Foundation.

2008: Fulbright Fellowship for Lecturing/Research in Chronobiology at Novosibirsk State University, Academic City, Novosibirsk, Russia, from Jan. 15 to Aug. 15, 2008. Performed research at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Academic City near Novosibirsk, Russia. Gave additional lectures at Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Novosibirsk State Science and Technology Library, Tomsk State University, Kemerovo State University, Barnaul State University, and Banaras Hindu University. Traveled extensively on the trans-Siberian railroad, Moscow to Vladavostok.

2007 James Allison Excellence in Teaching Award from the Bethany College Alumni Association.

Received a bronze medal and a $10,000 prize from the Edward R. Dewey Institute of Cycle Research, in recognition for chronobiology research.
