BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College professor Patrick Sutherland participated in a panel discussion Aug. 5 on classroom management in a pre-conference meeting of the 103rd Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s annual conference, held virtually this year due to the global pandemic.
Sutherland, who teaches in the Bethany Department of Communications and Media Arts, compiled and presented a list of best teaching practices on the topic of “Setting the Tone in the Classroom” during the first few class sessions of a college semester, as part of a workshop sponsored by the AEJMC Small Programs Interest Group.
“With the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupting traditional college instruction, this panel in-part explored how educators are striving to engage with college students in both a virtual active learning environment and in traditional brick and mortar classrooms around the country,” Sutherland said.
The panel session topic’s research was one of the starter projects for Sutherland during his one-semester sabbatical. Future projects will continue following up on his career-long research agenda of exploring how college teachers and administrators either adopt or resist the implementation of technology innovations in the classroom.
