Bethany College Introduces Dr. Stephen C. Foggatt as Dean of Student Retention and Success

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Stephen C. Foggatt as the new dean of student retention and success, a pivotal role aimed at enhancing the holistic academic experience and fostering student retention.

“As we welcome Dr. Foggatt to Bethany College, we are invigorated by the promise of his vision for our new dean of student retention and success position,” remarks Dr. Jamie Caridi, president of Bethany College. “His appointment marks a significant milestone in our commitment to fostering an environment of academic excellence and comprehensive support. We are eager to see the innovative strategies he will bring to enhance our students’ educational experiences and retention rates, underpinning our mission to prepare them for successful futures.”

Foggatt holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Southern Illinois University, complemented by a master’s degree in educational administration from Grand Canyon University, and a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Purdue University. With almost twenty years of higher education experience, he has shown dedication to fostering student growth and maintaining high academic standards.

Prior to Bethany College, Foggatt served as the associate dean of academic services at New Mexico Military Institute, where he oversaw advising, library services, tutoring/learning resources, and the first-year experience. His professional journey includes several other significant roles, including executive director of academic support at Montana State University, where he led initiatives funded by a $2.2 million Supporting Inclusive Practices (SIP) grant aimed at enhancing student retention.

Reflecting on Foggatt’s appointment, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Chuck Stinemetz remarks, “Dr. Foggatt’s proven track record and passion for student success make him an invaluable addition to our leadership team. We are excited to work alongside him to further our mission of empowering students to achieve their academic goals.”

Foggatt is enthusiastic to connect with the Bethany community and contribute to the institution’s commitment to student success.

“I view a college education as the ultimate investment – time, effort, and money – and the new resources created through the Title III grant will better position Bethany to maximize the return on that investment, leading to increased future opportunities. I’m excited to join the Bethany team and work alongside all the other dedicated educators on campus to give our students the best possible chance to experience a high level of academic success.”

The 2023 Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) grant is a significant milestone for the College, enabling Bethany to establish the new position of dean of student retention and success and promptly appoint Foggatt. Aptly titled “Building Connections for Student Success and Excellence in Advising,” this initiative marks a pivotal moment in the College’s commitment to enhancing learning outcomes and access to higher education.
