BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College senior political science major Sophie Morey, Mount Martha, Victoria, Australia, is chosen as a very honorable Presidential Fellow for the 2022-2023 calendar year, making her one of only four applicants from the entire U.S. to be selected. The program is run by the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. Established in 1970, CSPC offers college students hands-on experience with the U.S. Presidency, public policymaking, and the overall relationship with Congress.
Since Bethany College is not a partner institution with the Fellows Program, which has been a requirement in years past, Morey had many hefty obstacles to overcome. With the help of her advisor, Dr. Kayce Mobley, Morey holds the position of “at-large” fellow and CSPC now invites students from non-partner institutions to apply. She believes her experience at Bethany is to thank for her achievement.
“Bethany has truly propelled me for this. It has definitely taught me to push myself and go for what I want, and I believe that really shows in my lengthy application process and, of course, eventually acquiring the position,” Morey says.
Within the next several months, Morey will be drafting an extensive research paper concerning either the Presidency or Congress, while receiving mentoring from one of CSPC’s advisors. She will then travel to D.C. in March 2023 to present her work. Morey realizes how influential this will be to her future career and hopes to expand her professional network as much as possible.
“With this program, I’m hoping to learn more about the interplay between the U.S. government, Congress, and public policy, in particular, foreign affairs and international relations. I’m also really excited to connect with people who are very similar to me in terms of drive and interest.”
Morey plans to further her education post-graduation, in hopes of receiving a master’s degree in global affairs. She says she aspires to become an ambassador for international relations, one that’s like the United Nations.
