BETHANY, W.Va. – Valedictorian Dakota Maravelis of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, who completed his “perfect” college career as a double major in Political Science and Economics, was recognized during Bethany College’s 2016 Commencement ceremony on May 14. Dr. Katrina L. D’Aquin, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, presented Maravelis with the College’s prestigious Oreon E. Scott Award, which is given annually to the senior graduating with the highest academic standing.
“Not only has he undertaken this very rigorous path of study, but he has excelled in it,” D’Aquin said.
As a Political Science and Economics double major, Maravelis excelled every semester of his college career. He was named to the President’s List each semester, which is awarded to those who have a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while completing a minimum of 12 graded credit hours, as well as earned distinction on both sets of comprehensive exams. The honor of Distinction is reserved for those who perform exceptionally well and show mastery of their field of study in both written and oral assessments.
“The winner of the Scott Award this year has a tendency to not just say yes to opportunity, but to embrace those opportunities with a passion and a positive attitude,” D’Aquin added.
Maravelis was named Departmental Fellow for both Political Science and Economics. He also won numerous awards, including the W.F. Kennedy Prize for Outstanding Junior Man, the Forrest H. Kirkpatrick Award, the Thomas Jefferson Prize in Political Science, the International Relations Award and the John G. Chernenko Award.
On campus, Maravelis served as a Kalon Scholar Advisor, President of the Spanish Club, President of Beta Theta Pi and as a Resident’s Assistant. Athletically, he was a member of Bethany Men’s Track & Field Team and Tennis Team.
In addition, he is a member of numerous academic honor societies, including Gamma Sigma Kappa, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Kalon Leadership Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Pi Gamma Mu, Pi Sigma Alpha and Sigma Delta Pi.
Maravelis has also held many internships while at Bethany. He served as a Summer Associate for the Republican Committee of Allegheny County, an Extension Camping Instructor for West Virginia University and as a Summer Associate for AmeriCorps Vista.
He is the son of Michael and Michele Maravelis, and is a 2012 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
