BETHANY, W.Va. (July 3, 2024) – Bethany College is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Sylvan “Sy” Holzer, a distinguished former trustee and steadfast supporter of our institution. Holzer, a respected figure in the banking industry and a dedicated philanthropist, passed away on June 16, 2024, at the age of 75.
Holzer’s association with Bethany College was marked by his unwavering commitment to the advancement of higher education and the well-being of our community. Serving on the Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2020, Holzer brought his extensive experience and leadership skills to the forefront, significantly contributing to the strategic direction and growth of Bethany.
“The Bethany community deeply mourns the passing of our esteemed former trustee, Sy Holzer, whose visionary leadership and unwavering dedication significantly shaped Bethany College,” says Ken Bado, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “His legacy of service and commitment to education will forever inspire our community.”
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa., Holzer had a remarkable career spanning over 45 years in the banking sector. As the president of PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, he played a pivotal role in the bank’s development, earning widespread respect and admiration. His leadership extended beyond the corporate world into numerous community and civic organizations, including the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, among others.
In addition to his professional and philanthropic achievements, Holzer was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of 54 years, his brother, Dennis (and his wife Adrienne), his two children — Brian (his wife Lucy), Jodie (her husband Jarrod) — and five grandchildren. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate the life of Sy Holzer was held on June 20 at the Ralph Schugar Funeral Chapel.
Bethany College extends its heartfelt condolences to the Holzer family during this difficult time. Holzer’s contributions to the College and community will be remembered with deep gratitude and respect.
