BETHANY, W.Va (Sept. 25, 2024) – Bethany College is deeply saddened by the loss of James “Jim” F. Companion ‘63, a respected member of the Bethany community who passed away on Sept. 18, 2024, at the age of 83. Companion’s enduring connection to Bethany spanned decades, leaving an indelible impact on the College through his leadership, dedication, and generous spirit.

James "Jim" Companion headshotA proud native of Wheeling, W.Va., Jim graduated magna cum laude from Bethany with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. His time at the College was marked by exceptional leadership both in the classroom and on the field, where he captained the varsity football and baseball teams. In recognition of his athletic achievements, he was inducted into the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.

Beyond his academic and athletic accomplishments, Companion served Bethany in numerous capacities. For many decades, Companion presided over and served on the College’s Board of Trustees, where his guidance and vision were instrumental in shaping its strategic direction. His mentorship of countless students, alumni, and young professionals reflected his deep belief in the power of education and leadership.

Companion’s distinguished legal career included a term as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1969 to 1970, followed by his role as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia from 1973 to 1976. He then dedicated an impressive 47 years to Wheeling’s oldest law firm, Schrader, Companion, Duff & Law. His legacy in the legal field and community service continues to inspire future generations.

Bethany College extends its deepest condolences to Companion’s family, including his children, stepchildren, and grandchildren, as well as his many friends and colleagues. The entire Bethany community honors Companion’s life and contributions. His memory will remain a cherished part of the College’s history.
