Bethany, W.Va. (Dec. 16, 2024) – Bethany College honors the remarkable life of Dr. Eugene Miller ‘47, a distinguished alumnus and long-serving member of the College’s Board of Trustees, who passed away on Nov. 21, 2024, at the age of 99.
Dr. Miller’s connection to Bethany began in 1942 when he arrived on campus as the recipient of a full scholarship. He graduated magna cum laude in 1947 with a degree in journalism. During his time as a student, he founded and served as the first editor of The Bethany Tower, the College’s newspaper. His deep commitment to Bethany continued throughout his life, culminating in over four decades of service on the Board of Trustees, from 1970 to 2012.
In recognition of his contributions, Bethany College awarded Dr. Miller an honorary Doctor of Law (LL.D.) degree in 1969 and dedicated the Eugene Miller Room, located in Old Main. His achievements reflect the values of leadership, dedication, and service that define the Bethany community.
“Dr. Eugene Miller exemplified the spirit of Bethany College through his lifelong dedication to education, journalism, and public service,” said Ken Bado ‘77, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “His legacy will remain an enduring source of inspiration for our students, faculty, and alumni.”
Beyond Bethany, Dr. Miller’s storied career included roles as a journalist, business executive, professor, and Naval officer. His professional accomplishments were matched by a commitment to advancing education and ethical journalism.
Bethany College extends its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Miller’s family and friends. His profound impact on the College and his many contributions to society will be cherished and remembered.
The family has kindly requested that donations in Dr. Miller’s memory be made to Bethany College.
