Bethany, W.Va. (Dec. 9, 2024) – With a dazzling display of lights and a spirited chorus of “Merry Christmas,” the lighting of the campus Christmas tree marked the start of Bethany College’s annual Light Up Night. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of students, faculty, staff, and community members to celebrate the holiday season and support a meaningful cause.

The centerpiece of the event was the creative display of decorated trees, contributed by campus clubs, organizations, and departments. Each tree, ranging from Snoopy-themed designs to elegant charcuterie-inspired ornaments, showcased the imagination and thoughtfulness of the Bethany community. From towering trees adorned with candy and cookie cutters to charming smaller designs, the variety captivated attendees and sparked friendly bidding competition throughout the night.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Bethany College Choir delivered a memorable performance featuring holiday classics like “Carol of the Bells” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” filling Commencement Hall with warmth and holiday cheer.

Vice President and Dean of Students Jerry Stebbins, addressing the audience, emphasized the importance of the evening’s mission, saying, “Every dollar raised tonight goes directly to Bernie’s Kids, ensuring children in the Ohio Valley region experience a brighter holiday season. Please be generous.”

Bernie’s Kids is a charitable initiative founded nearly 40 years ago by former Brooke County Sheriff and Commissioner Bernard Kazienko to support those facing challenges during the holidays. Inspired by his uncle, Hillman “Izzy” Isinghood, who repaired and gifted toys to children, Bernie began purchasing toys and essential items for families and enlisted the help of friends and local businesses to meet the growing need. Following his passing in 2011, the Brooke County Deputy Sheriff’s Association has carried on his legacy through community support and fundraisers.

The energy of the crowd peaked during the live auction, as bids were passionately raised with laughter and excitement echoing through the room.

Thanks to the enthusiastic participation and generosity of the Bethany community and its supporters, the event brought in an impressive $4,330 for Bernie’s Kids – the highest amount collected in recent years. This total will provide invaluable support to children in need this holiday season.

A special thank-you goes out to all who contributed to making the evening a success, whether by decorating trees, participating in the auction, or simply being present to celebrate.
