BETHANY, W.Va. (Feb. 7, 2025) – Bethany College is honored to announce a heartwarming gift of $100,000 from Paul Chewning ’75 and Liz Stevens Chewning ’79 to the Build for a Lifetime campaign. This remarkable contribution will further the College’s mission to enhance its facilities, enrich academic programs, and elevate the student experience.
“We are deeply grateful to Paul and Liz Chewning for their unwavering support and steadfast belief in Bethany College,” said Bethany President Dr. Jamie Caridi. “Their remarkable gift will leave a lasting legacy, empowering us to transform the lives of our students and strengthen our community for generations to come.”
The Chewnings’ generosity reflects their lifelong dedication to Bethany and its enduring impact on students. Paul and Liz explained that when Jamie mentioned that Bethany needed its alumni to stretch and be a bit uncomfortable with their giving, “his message reached our ears, our hearts, and our wallets.”
The Chewnings’ relationship with Bethany runs deep. Beyond their financial support, they are active champions of the College’s mission. They generously funded the purchase of a new six-seater golf cart for the alumni office, ensuring visitors enjoy comfortable campus tours and event transportation. Additionally, they are major sponsors of Bethany’s Women & Leadership Symposium.
Paul Chewning’s ties to Bethany began as a student and later blossomed into leadership roles, including serving as the men’s lacrosse coach and as the College’s alumni director. Today, he continues to give back through service to Rotary International and on local committees and boards. Meanwhile, Liz Chewning has carved a legacy of her own. As one of three sisters who attended Bethany, she now chairs the fundraising committee for the Women & Leadership Program and contributes as a member of its executive committee.
“Bethany College holds a special place in our hearts,” the Chewnings shared. “This community shaped who we are today, and it is our honor to give back to the place that has given us so much. We hope this gift will inspire others to support Bethany’s future and ensure that every student has the opportunity for a transformative education.”
The Chewnings currently reside in Lexington, Ky., where they cherish time spent traveling and enjoying their family and grandchildren.
