BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 17, 2024) – This past weekend, Bethany College hosted an inspiring installment of the Grimes Lecture Series, featuring Olympic gold medalist and former Bethany Director of Admissions Dave Wottle. Addressing a packed house in Steinman Theatre, Wottle shared personal stories and reflections on his extraordinary athletic career, years at Bethany, and life lessons that have shaped his journey.

Wottle, a celebrated figure in United States Olympic history, won gold in the 800-meter race at the 1972 Munich Olympics, becoming the last American man to claim victory in this event. Throughout his lecture, he revisited the significance of that race, remarking, “Not a single week has gone by that I haven’t thought back to that moment.” He spoke of the “spirit of Olympism” that permeated his career and emphasized the importance of hard work, perseverance, and mental preparation, all which fueled his remarkable achievements.

Audience watching Dave Wottle Olympic raceOne of the most memorable moments of the lecture occurred when the audience watched a replay of Wottle’s famous race, erupting with cheers as they relived the excitement of his gold medal finish. Referencing his miraculous finish after being in last place for much of the race, Wottle humorously added, “Run it forward or backward, I win.”

Wottle’s connection to Bethany runs deep. From 1977 to 1982, he served in the College’s admissions office and coached track and cross country, during a period referred to as “the golden age of cross country at Bethany.” His athletes from this era were recognized during the lecture, with many standing to a round of applause. Several have since been inducted into Bethany’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Reflecting on his time as a coach, Wottle remarked, “It’s so rewarding for a coach to see athletes mature into adults and make their mark on the world. Those relationships continue even today through emails and conversations. It’s a real credit to the experience they had here at Bethany.” One former athlete shared how “running for Coach Wottle was an honor” and described the profound impact of being on his team, learning invaluable lessons in teamwork, friendship, and dedication to a cause greater than themselves.

Wottle’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. He shared how he was initially hesitant to accept the position at Bethany, feeling the weight of stepping into big shoes left by the previous director of admissions, Robert Riley ‘67. However, he credits the support and encouragement of his team for pushing him to accept the role, noting, “Those track guys were so encouraging and supportive. They really pushed me in my personal life, and I’m indebted to them.”

He spoke about the importance of setting goals, staying mentally prepared, and maintaining confidence. “Sometimes that little edge is the difference between achieving and not achieving your goals,” he noted, adding, “Winners don’t give up in the face of adversity; we keep moving.”

Bethany holds a special place in Wottle’s heart, and he and his wife, Jan, have maintained a strong connection to the College. “The friendships we made here have lasted a lifetime,” Wottle shared, reflecting on cherished memories with those who became lifelong friends.

Wottle’s Olympic journey and his time at Bethany highlight the power of perseverance and the value of strong relationships. As the audience departed, they left with more than just memories of an extraordinary athlete—they carried lessons on life, commitment, and the pursuit of excellence.

For those who could not attend or would like to relive the memorable event, a Flickr album featuring photos from Dave Wottle’s Grimes Lecture is now available. Additionally, a full recording of the lecture can be accessed on Bethany College’s website.
